Does anyone have problems with their nails? I have had lupus for a number of years. I also have low thyroid and raynauds. My nails have been thin and break so they peel and split. It's not a major thing but they look awful and are painful. Just wondering if anyone has issues or am I by myself on this? Is there anything that can be done? Any products?

Hi there. Sorry to tell you - nothing helps! I have had this problem for over 20 years and have still not found any products that help! I have tried everything, spending a small fortune on lotions and potions, without success! It is horrible - I spend all my time hiding my hands from other people because my nails are so ugly. Do you have the same problem with your toe nails as well as your finger nails? My big toe nails are quite disgusting - broken flaky, misshapen and short! If you ever find a solution, I would be grateful if you would contact me. Good Luck!

Hi your post sounded just like me!!! I have not had decent nails for 30 years since being diagnosed with lupus. Toes are just as bad. I too have spent a small fortune on nail products ----- nothing helps!!

Yes this has always been a problem for me but I have noticed a slight improvement since starting Hydroxychloroquine. otherwise nothing really helps.

hi its funny that taking hydroxy does help. quite a lot. I have had dreadful nails for the last few years. then I was told I had lupus sle so put on hydroxy. they then started to grow but it took several months. they looked much better, then I stopped and they went down hill. I was on 2 tablets a day. but now on 1 every other day. my nails are not as good. I hate hydroxy as it makes my body ache really bad. gives me fibromyalgia. now I have heart problems and maybe some eye problems I may have to go on it again full strength. life on the lupus path

Try dipping your fingernails in warm olive oil for half hour every day. You'll see a difference after few weeks. Try it - it works.

My nails were in bad way before they diagnosed SLE, I have reynauds as well. They were thin, no substance to them. Since taking plaquenil/hydroxychloroquine, been on it for about 8 years, my nails have improved and the raynauds is much better, I dont feel the cold so much.

I also use an almond oil hand wash and cream and I'm convinced thats helped, almond oil strengthens nails, I'd recommend it...

ok a weird one from left field, but I knew a luppie who used to swear by sitting with her fingers in a bowl of warm jelly once a week, she had amazing strong nails.

I use Healthy Hoof - yes, it's used by equestrians for their horses! A pot lasts for ages and it's made by Gena Laboratories. I rub some into my cuticles every night with a big dollop of hand cream and sleep with cotton gloves on.

Sorry to tell you. . . But I've found nothing to help the peeling, brittleness or thin nails. I've tried a little bit of just about everything over the years, including drinking gelatin. I think it's just a part of Autoimmune diseases/

Hi, I had in the past, issues with my nails. Diagnosed with low calcium & low vit d, daily calcium 1800 mg & 5,000 iu vit d. You have to see a doc & have your levels checked. I also have Hashimotos disease of the thyroid. They do nothing for it, guess that bad outweighs the good when meds are concerned. I have suffered with burning, numb feet for 10+ years and they hurt all the time. When I lie down, my legs go completely numb, spine-lumbar issues, scoliosis, CTD, SLE Lupus. I am a mess, the foot thing is maddening, what do you do for your feet? Is it spine related? I will do anything for relief-
