i had like ledges in my nails..I called them speed bumps, and they were horizontal...I read they were from thyroid issues(Im hypothyroid)....Im suppose to have mild lupus too...Im going to see if i can find yours anywhere ive looked before, and be back soon..

Ok found this:nhs.uk/conditions/nail-abno...

here is another site too:webmd.com/skin-problems-and...

webmd.com/skin-problems-and...

Dgleds I think yours are Beau's lines - more likely due to systemic illness (i.e. Lupus, sjogrens or RA flares) or psoriasis or medication toxicity than thyroid problems I believe. I have them on my toenails and they come through so it's possible to track my flare ups from them as it takes six months for toenails to grow out. I'm Hypothyroid too but I've never read that this can cause Beau's lines. TTx

It didn't look like the Beau lines though that's in these pics, cause i thought that at one time too...articles.mercola.com/sites/...

oh well, i haven't seen them in a while so your probably right...

the latest thing is CPPD...so fun getting older..lol

in reply todgleds

I was just going by your "speed hump" description Dgleds. I think what Lauralulu is asking about is occurring under the nail bed and isn't affecting the surface in the way yours may be, from your description.

Lauralulu if you put nail query into the Lupus UK or HU search engine then other very similar posts will come up, with replies that may help you.

in reply todgleds

Ps the Mercola link here is only showing the most extreme examples of each diseased nail - stock images and info that many other dedicated nail websites etc show. I use the NHS one because they aren't trying to sell me a product!

Ok..

I put 3 other sites for the lady asking at the top too...I was just trying to help see what i could find for her...

in reply todgleds

Oh I know this Dgleds - I used your link to NHS nail conditions too! I was just trying to say that the stock images are usually the very extreme end so that your raised horizontal lines sound to me like Beau's lines but the examples shown are the most extreme so may not resemble yours or mine?

I have thyroid issues too and I looked up nails on many websites. It can be a result of serious illness, so I didn't dwell on it too much. I wonder if I have Raynauld's because the blood supply to the nails can be poor with that, I believe, but doctors are so slow to get to the bottom of it. I am thinking of going to see a medical dowser.

Hi lauralulu. Do u mean ridges on your nails? I've noticed especially my thumbs have ridges lately, reminds me of an old uncle I had.

I listened to part of the adrenal summit recording someone had posted the link on here, and the man said it was gut related, and he found out he had 2gut infections.

I am sure it is gut related as I have gut issues since surgery and drug damage in 2000, but the conventional system seems so limited in knowledge of the gut from my experience.

Hello :) thank you all for your replies. I thought I'd add a little bit more detail, my nails are smooth, no bumps or dents in them, but just the strange white line banding that goes across them. When I've look online they look similar to the pictures of 'mees line's', but all the causes for them that I can find is arsenic poisoning so I don't think it is mees lines! I'm off to my first appointment with my rheumatologist next week so I really hope he will have some answers :( il keep posted on what he says. Thank you again :)

in reply toLauralulu

Just a little note of warning to you - a lot of rheumatologists won't acknowledge any autoimmune process occurring unless you have positive antibodies.

This doesn't mean you won't develop these though and it doesn't mean that you don't have Lupus or other Connective Tissue Disease.

The only advice I can offer is to avoid toxins, look after your body as well as you possibly can and read up. I started out very like you and am now 53. I think the reason it has taken me 6 years to get the right diagnosis is partly because I self managed so well that I kept everything at bay by cutting out gluten, dairy and refined food plus sugars and caffeine and finding I was vitamin D and calcium deficient - so take AdCalD3 and also Levothyroxine.

If I'd kept eating and drinking bad stuff and getting fatter then I believe it would have shown up on my blood sooner. There are known links with gluten, pollution, certain fats, smoking and excessive amounts of alcohol i.e. lifestyle to autoimmune diseases.

This said I know people who are vegans or are following an autoimmune protocol diet or whatever they feel will help - who still have RA or Lupus. But they probably are greatly increasing their chances of stopping or slowing down the autoimmune disease (s) by looking after themselves as well as possible and learning as much as possible about autoimmunity.

Best of luck - I do hope your appointment goes well.

Thank you so much for your reply :) I'm definetly going to make sure I look after myself better since all of this, its all just mentally getting me down as well not knowing where I stand :(

in reply toLauralulu

Uncertainty and feeling you won't be believed are the worst things I know. This is why I'm emphasising looking at lifestyle choices while you're young and it's not too late. I wish I could convey this to my three sons - two of whom smoke and suffer from similar things to those I suffered at their age. I think that if you can look your consultant in the eye and politely stick to your guns, in the knowledge that you are doing everything you can to help yourself already, it will help.

Maybe the lifestyle message needs to be conveyed to my sons by a stranger?!

I have been referred to a dermatologist by my GP but he warned me not to have high expectations of any diagnosis or treatment.

I get similar lines and tiny little 'dents' and these are symptomatic of my Psoriatic Arthritis. X

Ps this makes interesting viewing I think: betrayalseries.com/episode-...

Yes, we have all been betrayed by the conventional system or terribly let down!

Hi Lauralulu, yes I have this problem, more ridges than lines and occasionally my nails grow with dips in them.

I've got dents in my nails and on two fingers my cuticles are receding. It's like that in both hands and on the same fingers, which I found strange... I say receding but it looks as though I haven't got any cuticles left on those fingers and I'm it sure how much more the skin can go back before exposing my nail root! :-/

Sorry, I've nothing to advise on your situation. I just wanted to comment because I've got nail issues that perhaps someone could shed some light on. (Better than starting a new thread, right?) :)

I hope you find out what the issue is.
