Has anybody noticed their teeth just falling apart with lupus? Of after any dental work done getting infection and needing antibiotics ? I look after my teeth very well, but they are breaking at the slightest thing...Pasta can break teeth !

I am on antibiotics again this week for abscess, and I am dreading going back .

yes, me too. Having to ring dentist again this week, it's costing me a fortune !!! I'm sure the dentist thinks I'm just stalking him. I'm waiting for sjogrens test, so put it down to dry mouth. Has your dentist recommended anything for weak teeth ?

Ditto, I've lost 3 teeth in the last 18months - either due to absecces or teeth breaking - these are large back teeth too, so if this continues I'll be sucking my food soon, yuk!

I wonder if it's due to immuno suppressants i've been on.

Yet another joy of lupus hey!

Me too! I get an abscess at least every 3 months & hav had 2 extractions within last 6 months. My teeth just seem to be crumbling & i had really beautiful teeth :( only comfort is its only my back teeth so i hope it stays this way. My dentist prescribes me with a high fluoride toothpaste because i have sjgroens i think all dentist are meant to prescribe this if this is a possible cause of tooth decay. Since i started using it i haven't had any probs (touch wood) lol!

My teeth have been fine so far, but I have been avoiding immune suppressants and steroids.

I do have issues with my sinuses that have caused a few random tooth aches that have gone away when the swelling went down...

So many interesting links made on here! My teeth have also been breaking and had root fillings etc and costs so much! I have lupus and sjorgens and take steroids, but although I have totally dry eyes I do have saliva, unusual I think to have selective sjorgens! Is it lupus or steroids causing these problems? Which toothpaste do you use SophieH ?

Yep same here all my big back teeth soon as I have any work done the next morning my face is like a balloon and end up on aintibiotics, and always need more work I have lost a tooth a year for 3 years and really doing my head in as I go to the dentist regular, and always have, said to say its defo to do with lupus and so frustrating, when u mention it to the doctors they act like they have not heard it before, so last time I was their I told them about this site and how helpful it is due to other people having same problems as me, at least it makes u feel like ur not going mad good luck at the dentist and the only thing I would say is ask for anyibiotic just to have the prescription at home incase it kicks of really helps

Having problems with my back teeth, no infections yet but really hurt! Have sjogrens too so the dryness causes my gums to hurt. Think the methotrexate has made mine worse, doctor gave me some mouthwash called deflam which is fantastic. Have dentist tomorrow so hope no damage to teeth.

John Mills artical vasculitis and teeth for dentists.

On healthunlocked vasculitis is what you need to read. Hope this explains things.

My back teeth play up and one has just crumbled away. Don't understand it. My dentist doesn't quite understand, either, as he says my cleaning is good and there are no signs of gum disease. I suspect I have sjogrens, too. Pfft.

Do you have dry mouth? Apparently with Sjogren's, a dry mouth can lead to tooth decay. I started getting cavities several years before being diagnosed with Sjogren's and lupus. My dentist also noted my dry mouth but never connected it to autoimmune disease..

Rotten is lupus 5 months ago I had a lot of work done now next week back again for a large amount of work sending me broke. I have had lupus and been on steroids for 12 years plus many other meds. Not going for dentures so guess I will keep paying - sjogrens is also part of my life - Nasty, nasty lupus

I've been to the dentist today and he didn't charge me as it was less than 2 months ago since I last paid. He has also recommended chewing calcium tablets. I should take 2 a day for thinning bones but admit I don't take them often, but will now :)
