Hi, Just got back from the dentist where the hygenist was pleased with how my gums were considering how sore they had been. My dentist said that my teeth are ok but my gums were still not well, though the teeth are still "hanging in there".
Does anyone else have similar problems? And if so, is it because of the Lupus or the tablets?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

Sorry to hear about your problems with your teeth and gums. I think maybe in a year or two, I too will have them all out. It's good news though that your gums are much better now.
Take care and hope all goes well with the new teeth. x
I have Scleroderma, Sjogrens and Lichen Planus plus other auto immune diseases - I also have the same problem - some of my teeth are holding on but have been told that 6 of my top front should come out !!
I also have lichen planus which was diagnosed long before my Lupus. I was prescribed betnesol soluble tablets which you disolve one tablet in 15 mls of warm water and hold in the mouth for 5 minutes. This does help with the inflamation and soreness.
I have problems with my mouth and teeth and know that it is caused by Sjogrens mainly, dentist tried to get me to see them every 9 months and told them no way, every 6 months please as usual especially with all the problems I have had in the past, I have had to have 3 teeth taken out because they literally crumbled due to Sjogrens and another tooth isn't that sharp now but hanging onto it xx
I personally have analysed the evidence and have come up with the conclusion that tooth problems are caused or at least worsened by the medication, in particular the steroid based medicines. Also painkillers rob the body of vitamin C, which is bad news for Gums, teeth, bones and joints.
Take care lovely ones x x
It is HIGHLY advisable to visit a Periodontist yearly if not seasonally for cleaning/scaling/assessment to maintain a healthy SLE mouth. Ask for a reference. Teeth should last a life time.
BIOTENE mouthwash/toothpaste used widely with cancer patients and dry mouth sufferers (Sjogrens / SLE / etc...).
SENSODYNE toothpaste adds extra protection for tooth enamel protecting longevity of teeth and minimizes tooth sensitivity.
Rxs used for SLE and other autoimmune diseases/disorders are well known to negatively effect the health of mouth/teeth/gums.
Remember inflammation occurs in gums too. Gums help hold teeth in place. Inflammation creates bacterial havens for plaque build up. Once plaque has formed more damage is done. Vicious cycle.
