I am currently on a 2nd course of antibiotics trying to clear what started as a tooth infection but then went into the sinus and became a nasty bacterial sinus infection as well (some of my teeth have grown into the sinus) . Will having antibiotics in my system affect blood tests and if it does how long should I wait after finishing them? Thanks

Blood Tests when on antibiotics
Good question. All i can usefully say is that i am diagnosed with chronic sinusitis + had many years of osteomyelitis in my upper jaw - the 2 overlapped & interacted. For years i’ve constantly been on daily prophylactic antibiotics (coamoxoclav 625mg twice daily) for early onset Antibody Deficiency Disease (aka hypogammaglobulinaemia, a PID...which explains my neg ANA etc - i cannot make antibodies so am one of those unusual seroneg lupus patients) and my GP/rheumatology lupus clinic shared care guidelines myco monitoring blood tests have continued every 1-2 months as usual. Also 3-6 monthly immunology clinic blood tests have continued. My results remain consistent....but certain white blood cells (ie the neutrophils) get higher results when i have flaring infection
Like yours, my infections are bacterial, and, like my infant onset lupus & Antibody Deficiency Disease, my predisposition to chronic complex persistence pattern multisystem infections began many years before i began to be prescribed immunosuppression meds. I am 65
Hope something in there helps and that your infections clear up asap...i’ll be interested to read replies as they come in 🍀🍀🍀🍀 Coco
PS if you’re going through the diagnostic process and your medics are saying you can’t have lupus cause your blood results are seron neg (neg ANA etc), then ask whether:
- your lymphocytes are below normal range, and whether your records show that they’ve tended to be low in the past
- your complements are below normal range etc
- your immunoglobulins are below normal range etc
In my case these have been chronically below normal range for decades, which has helped confirm my lupus diagnosis (along with my medical history, other diagnosed conditions, clinical examination etc) and explain my seronegative lupus + sjogrens + vasculitis etc + get my simultaneous PID (Primary Immunodeficiency Disease) diagnosed
Thank you for your help
Hi whenever I'm on antibiotics and fighting infection my white cells tend to go in the normal range which they never are ordinarily
Best wishes get well soon 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you
Thanks
I have had antibiotics and as long as they know when you are on them, they can make allowances. My blood count is actually better on them as the body is fighting back, but I haven't known the medicine to do anything.
I always tell them what I am on. Nothing has ever made an impact so they must filter stuff out.
Regarding sinus problems, last year mine became chronic for the first time in two years and I needed a strong cortisone sprays and three lots of antibiotics on the trot. They damaged the lining of the nasal passages and I was hospitalised with the nose bleed from hell which took several hours to stop. Now my haemoglobin count is well down and I am high doses of iron. I have used nelimed and sterimar saline with a mild, natural antihistamines for years so now I haven't just gone back to them ex exclusively, I have two small nasal sprays with saline and teatree and x clear to use regularly during the day and night up to six times or more and a moisture rich antibiotic cream, plus a saline cream to keep them moist as dryness is the main cause of problems and inflammation. The saline clears and cleans, the tea tree does the rest and the cream keeps it moist and happy. The stuff cleared quickly, the inflammation goes down and a less likely cause of infection and pain, so very happy sinuses. It's worth trying a few different saline sprays but they are better than medical ones and you can use them more often.
Good luck.
