Vitamin D deficiency.

Hey everyone! I recently had a bunch of blood tests done by my doctor. I had my vitamin D, B-12, my iron, and my Thyroid tested. All have come back normal except my vitamin D, and possibly my iron. They did not mention my iron, so I sent my doctor a follow up message about that. My vitamin D level is 24. I have been taking 1000 units of vitamin D-3 for the past three months, so it is quite possible that my vitamin D levels were even lower than this before I started taking supplements. What I am wondering is what are the normal levels for vitamin D? There are a bunch of different specialists arguing about the optimal levels of vitamin D. Since you guys (and Mary specifically) are so knowledgeable on this issue, what do you think my optimal vitamin D levels should be having APS? I have read that low vitamin D can also cause hyperparathyroidism, autoimmune disorders like APS and SLE Lupus (that is why darker skinned races have higher prevalence's of SLE Lupus) and Type 2 Diabetes. I also read that being deficient in vitamin D can also cause fatigue, muscle weakness, bone fractures, and chronic pain. These symptoms are often times misdiagnosed as Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Do you guys think the 1000 units of daily vitamin D I've been taking for the past three months is enough to have moved me out of the deficiency range of under 20 into the insufficiency range of under 30. I will let you guys know how my iron is once that comes back. Any how, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

J

My tests showed I was very deficient in vitamin d. I had a intensive dose for a few weeks of a drug I can't remember and I am now on 2 tablets of adcal daily. I noticed a big difference in my fatigue and pain once my levels went up. Different hospitals have different ranges so best to check with your doctor.

I am back in a healthy range now.

Hi,from what I've been told and from my own experience vit d should be 50 or above.my last test came up at 29 that was a few months ago.and I was put on 1600 iu a day.but the time before a few years ago my level was only 7.so was put on more than 10,000.hope this helps.

I was deficient which was hardly surprising as I hardly left the house for a few years.

I refused Adcal from GP as there was nothing wrong with my calcium levels and people often say they have upset tummys when they take it.

GP's can prescribe vitamin d3 capsules and to start with I think 2,000 units a day is necessary to get levels up.

Years later I have learnt how crucial vitamin D is. and that vitamin k2 should be taken with it too.

It is such a shame that it's called vitamin d, it doesn't sound important enough. It is so important, sorry I haven't got links at the moment, Google vitamin d/k2.

My levels are in the 80's and sometimes 100.

I GO IN THE SUN FOR AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR EVERY DAY

WITHOUT, yes WITHOUT sunscreen.

Now that is another subject, sun creams are full of harmful chemicals.

There is a d3/k2 spray that you can buy.

HI, you need a print out of the ranges used at the hospital doing the tests. My vitamin D sits in the 90's or did so at the last round of tests, optimum with my ranges is around 76 - 90. MaryF

Hi-

Ranges are different per labs and hospitals. I have read that optimal range is between 50 to 100. I too test severely low on vitamin D. My level is 9. Doc has me on a 50,000 unit pill once a week. It is D2 so it is the plant soluble D and not D3. I supplement with magnesium. I also read which is quite interesting that Vitamin D helps maintain the immune system and helps to "turn off" antibodies when fighting infections. Quite interesting when comes to autoimmune disorders.

I have been doing a lo of reading on all of this tonight. I noticed that my liver enzymes and bilirubin levels have come back down into the normal range since I have been taking vitamin D 3. I read that vitamin D 3 also reduces insulin resistance which explains how my blood sugar is getting better. I have fatty liver disease and it is apparently linked to vitamin D deficiency and vitamin E deficiency. I have also read that low vitamin D is linked to Multiple Sclerosis, brain damage, and Alzheimer's. There is one study that I read that states that more than 50 percent of all people in the UK are vitamin D deficient. I'm going to take 4000 units of vitamin D daily , as it is listed as the safest highest dose you can take without seeing a doctor. I will also await further instructions from my doctor when he comes back from his vacation. Thanks for all of the support. I really appreciate it.

My APS doc here in the US says I need to be above 50, if not higher. I was a 30 and I am now on 10K IUI a day.

Many of us - me included - don't absorb vitamin D very well, particularly as we get older. My GP had me on a high dose for more than a year, with little improvement. Then I discovered Betteryou sprays - you absorb the vitamin through the tissues in your mouth - and there was an immediate and dramatic improvement. May not work for everyone, but certainly did for me!

As others have responded, in most labs in the UK, more than 50 is normal/sufficient. But if u want to avoid any link with autoimmune type of conditions its best to have it between 75-100. i had similar level as yours. I took 60000 units sachets of VitD3 for 6 weeks followed by 2000 units maintenance for another 6 weeks and it bumped it up to 95 and since then it has stayed between 75-95. 1000 units daily seems a bit low. Even in pregnancy, max allowed is 2000 units daily. Your plan for 4000 units daily seems fine to me but perhaps might be worth discussing the treatment dosage with your GP first. Good luck x

Vit d-3 with k2 is a must by what I understand it helps with proper absorption. A decent one is on Amazon that our doctor advises. Gina also spoke about this as I recall you might look that up as well. Because of our weak immune system one of my doctors says to be 80-100. But check with your doc please. You can pm for brand on Amazon if you like, I do not profit from it in any way :)

Thank you guys for all of the support!

I was reading a study that by giving patients vitamin D supplements, they can prevent a lot of conditions in the future and save the healthcare industry money. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to many different conditions like MS, Alzheimer's. If they really wanted to eliminate cost, they should try an ounce of prevention. Thanks for the info and link Apsnotfab.
