Tested Positive Will it Affect my INR?

Tested positive for covid. Only mild symptoms so far.

I have APS and Lupus SLE. I take warfarin, hydroxychloroquine and vitamin D.

My question is will it affect my INR and should I be speaking to the warfarin clinic? Although I couldn’t go in to have an INR test anyway as I’m positive so obviously can’t be around people.

Hi Bobbydoodle, here are hopes for your speedy recovery. I had Covid about a year ago and it did affect my INR, pulling it downward slightly and it had stayed there, so I needed a slight tweak of warfarin. I thankfully had a mild case and was on HCQ too at the time. I have read of others whose INR was affected, but it seems so individualized. The folks on this site know far more than I- good luck and stay safe!

If you don’t mind, what condition is HCQ prescribed for? In USA this was trialled to treat covid ?

Hi there, yes my doc prescribed it to me because I have APS triple + with High titers. So I take it alongside warfarin. I wondered if that is why my tussle with Covid was mild or if I just got lucky.

As with any bug, virus etc, there can be a tendency for the INR to do a merry dance at times, do keep a close eye, however it may not happen to you. MaryF

Thanks the problem I have is I don’t have my own machine so no way of testing my INR until I’m out of quarantine.

I hope it settles for you, do get in touch with the clinic if you get worried. MaryF

Yes, I believe it will for the redonda Mary says, plus I will add my own reasons IF you are on warfarin:

Paracetamol ( Tylenol) will raise the INR for most of us.

Steroids , if prescribed, will really raise.

I have to have steroids IM - I’ve found it will not raise quite as much and will not bother the GI system as much.

Antibiotics- will usually really bother the INR.

If you are in the Covid group that are unlucky and have vomiting/ diarrhea… that really affects the INR.

So really make sure you consult the doctor,

Boy, sorry about that Christmas gift. Can you return it? 😕

I echo suggestions that you stay in touch with your INR clinic. You may not be their first APS patient who has COVID and a ? INR. They may have a procedure or a plan.

Definitely call Warfarin Clinic ASAP . If it’s a comfort , my Anti Coag specialist told me during Pandemic to take my anti coag med and statin every day religiously . That it is a good preventative to be on. These clinics are doing a lot of research on CV . Good to stay in touch. Take care get well soon. Keep us posted on your journey .P S If you don’t mind me asking ; Why do you take hydroxychloroquine. That was considered a covid treatment early on, no?

I called the warfarin clinic and they didn’t seem too worried they just said to come in on Tuesday when I am out of isolation to get my INR checked.

I was prescribed Hydroxychloroquine for my Lupus SLE so could be that plus the vaccines that has meant my covid symptoms where so mild.

Coincidentally lucky for you. I think that’s what Pres / Donald Trump was given for his covid . ( On trial at the time .) Not approved as a treatment for some reason . As plentiful stocks and cheap . Thanks .

Donald Trump was treated with that when had Covid . He recovered in a week. He has no conditions which helps but could have helped, plus if on blood thinners that would prevent clots . My specialist told me that , said take it religiously AT SAME TIME every day .

Just an up date. I am out of isolation today and went to get my INR checked and my level is 4.9! I’ve never been above 2.6 before. My target range is between 2 and 3.
