How do I start eating healthy and maintain a diet?

Hi, first post on here. My name is David and I am a 22 year old male. I guess I recently decided to start eating healthier, but have no idea what to eat or where to start. I eat a lot of junk food and I don't exercise regularly, and sometimes I just don't eat or I overeat. Yes, I am depressed. I am not overweight in the slightest. I weigh 143 lbs and stand 5'9" tall. I would like a 'diet' plan and some advice on what I should do. I also want to incorporate it into my girlfriend's and our 2 year old's diet. Thank you in advance!

Hi and welcome to the group. Do you have any allergies to certain foods? Have you talked with your doctor about the diet plan? Did they say what you can eat/drink? Do you have any favorite foods?

I am not allergic to any types of foods. I love steak and have been staying away from soda and high fructose corn syrup.

Would you be okay with a low carb high protein diet?

I'm welcome to anything that will give me the nutrients I need without going overboard on the unhealthy stuffs. Such as sugar and such.

I will be willing to help with the carb counting. Are you okay with a note?

It sounds like you've already resolved to do what needs doing, ie., drop the junk food. Don't overcomplicate this: if you're eating proper meat, vegetables, eggs and dairy, then you'll be "eating healthy".

You might be interested in a couple of posts I put in the LCHF (low-carb high-fat) forum. Although the weight-loss aspects may not be relevant to you, the basic components of the diet - ordinary home-cooked food - are healthy for anyone. It mostly boils down to buying tasty, filling ingredients that don't drive you to binge on rubbish (as low-fat low-calorie diets tend to do), and learning to cook them in ways you enjoy.

Hi davidr64

Welcome to the Healthy eating forum. There are some 'EatWell' pages, connected to this forum, that you might find helpful:

nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/

Also, there is a forum (also on Health Unlocked) called 'NHS weight loss' where there are regular free weigh-in groups - and lots of extra support too, so that might be worth a look as well:

Hi David, the easiest diet is a whole food plant based vegan one. There is no calorie counting, it is proven to be the healthiest lifestyle on a whole range of scales. The only golden rule is to eat sufficiently at each at every meal.

I can make that more complex to deal with any health issues you might have. But base your meals around legumes, vegetables fruit etc and you can have the easiest and cheapest meals on the planet.

start out basic. Drink IL of gud water every morning, have a daily salad and some beans/stew ..start by adding good meals..then subtracting "not so good ones" Make it a goal to eliminate the 4 C's...cookies cakes candies and cokes! I like a good meal replacement shake and a green drink in there somewhere too..

good jouney in your ubersante~

Hi David I too am in the same boat of starting massive changes. I think it is finding the diet that works for you. Some can do a complete makeover on eating straight away but some need some more time. I read this today and may help start the ball rolling or at least give you some ideas. Good luck and keep us posted.
