I have managed to so totally fail therapy that I am now discharged from the people on the hospital. Has anyone used the book "heal your ptsd" to recover? I am thinking of using it and would appreciate advice/guidance.

I think that educating yourself on the subject of PTSD is a great idea but I think that it should not be a replacement of a therapy or consultation with a doctor.
Everyone's story is different and we need to put everything into context. What might work for one person, might be actually harmful to another.
I think reading books and resources is very important but I would like to share a word of caution:
Self therapy can be dangerous if it leads to a highly triggered state. Some people do experience (severe) dissociation while talking/thinking about their traumatic experiences. If a therapist is there, at least there is someone who can help bring you back to here & now. Without really good coping skills/grounding it is too risky to let yourself be triggered beyond the point of coping...
That's something to keep in mind.
Hi
I'm sorry to read what you've said.
I agree with Nathalie and commend you for trying to continue and help yourself.
I do think that maybe, try another dr and get some help somewhere else?
Good luck and best wishes.
I can't go anywhere else, unless I can afford to pay privately - and I can't. The hospital was the top of the NHS treatment. I can't cope with attending hospital unless hubby stays with me. I explained this to the shrink and said I wanted to crochet or just wind wool to ground me, but he said no - well, he discharged me. Maybe I should write back and try again?
I think maybe you should or try another dr?
It seems to me a bit harsh if he wouldn't let you just fiddle with wool. Maybe there was a personality clash?
May be talk to your dr and tell him/her and see what they say. They might feel they could get you to see someone else?
Good luck and my very best wishes.
Thanks - it's just so frustrating. Wait 15 months to see this guy and nothing! I will talk to my GP and see what he can suggest. In the meantime, I will try and carry on smiling!!
Hi Vonnies sorry this happened to you. That was a bit harsh and cold of him to do that when you obviously needed treatment. I have read tons of self-help books, lots on PTSD, I don't think I've read the book you've asked about, but from my experience, you do need someone on that journey with you. We can't be objective about ourselves and it most often takes a therapist to notice certain things that we are unaware of. There are all kinds of books and therapists, some of them body-based which are good too, but I really think you need the personal touch. Just having someone to guide you and express your feelings to can't be underestimated in healing from PTSD.
So keep trying, go back to your GP, stand up for yourself and tell him that your treatment is very important. Smiling is good but don't neglect yourself or play down how you are feeling either
Thanks mijas07. I have written back to the shrink, stating how disappointed I am by his institutional approach to therapy. I doubt it will make a difference, but I feel better. My GP has asked for a copy of the letter I sent him, so I think I will give him a copy of what I wrote, the discharge letter he sent me, and my response. Maybe he can think of something else.
Yes I agree with everyone here, it is not right that you would be discharged and that is a let down NOT because of you but a failure of the system to support you through this delicate and crucial time in your healing. You have every right to challenge this, and find some one who is more suited to helping you though this. You are worth it!!! You deserve the best!!!!!! Don't give up
Thanks littletraveller. Have written a letter to the shrink, and I will see what my GP says. Thanks for the support
Hi Did your therapist discuss with you why he was discharging you? It should be amicable between the two of you. How many sessions did you have? Some hospitals only allow 10 or 12 and after that your discharged. I was lucky I've had nearly a year of therapy one more session and I get discharged. Have a talk with your doctor explain to him how you feel and maybe he can get in touch with whovever you saw and maybe get you someone else. If your doctor doesn't agree with the discharge he can get it revoked . Sorry this has happened to you. Please be very careful with the self-help books do not try any of the Therapy in them as it can be dangerous as you need someone to ground you and could make you worse . Take care 😊
I saw him twice colliedog. I will speak to my gp; I am giving him copies of letters.
That's not right Hun he hardly got started with you is it England you stay ? If so according to my English friends 10/12 sessions is the most and if your not happy with him or her you can ask for someone else ! Stick to your guns Hun tell him you don't agree with the discharge and you want someone else ! Good luck 😊Xx
Thanks colliedog!!! I plan to do exactly that. I so appreciate all the support from you and everyone else. It's great that I am in this forum. Xx😊
