hi, it happens to us all, if you are going to continue cooking, set timers, and reminders, and if you have a smell problem, ie, hightened, use your nose, for smell, of cooking, if you are getting too much brain fog, don’t cook on that day, and ask for help.
I have the same problems. Now I have a small air fryer and that helps as it's on a timer and bleeps at me when cooking is complete.
On better days I tend to batch cook and freeze portions that can be defrosted and microwaved on foggy days - again although I can forget I have something in the microwave the timer will stop any disasters.
thank you both , it’s just getting frustrating and upsetting and I’m 39 and have to keep getting help from my mom who is 80 and it’s getting to much .
I use the air fryer a lot it has helped tremendously but I decided to boil some sweet patatoes and I got kept checking on them then I got fatigued forgot all about it and went got my bed to rest .
Can the specialist or GP help in anyway , is thier any type of memory course or anything .
Thank you I will use the alarm on my phone I’ve learnt a lesson today
Hi Noura1985For me I have noticed my memory is worse when I am worried or fearful. So when you get a flare and fear where this whole thing is going you both have more problems and notice them more.
I use lots of memory aids like chalkboard door hangers and alarms on phone. I put appliances on timers and buy ones that switch themselves off ( hair straightners)
I have notice that I have less when I have the better periods of health.
I felt better in myself for not beating myself up when I forgot something.
We are not stupid,we have difficulty with memory, sometimes.
Hi Noura1985, Memory has always been bad with Fibro, but this last year, after so much change bin life, it's been really bad, I've left stuff on stove twice, burnt pots, and left bath running, as live on own, I worry alot now. I have to put in diary on phone everything as I forget, even taking tabs I've done for years, I forget. I worry if like this now, what in 10 years time.!! x
Yes I am the same as everyone else on here and I keep calling things by a different name. My leg is my knee, my arm is my hand etc. And I don't know of any help with this. I have been to my GP for a memory test and I was just OK so got to go back next month. But she said if it's my fibromiagia there is nothing they can do.
I use an induction hob and that has a timer.😇 If I want veggies cooked for 6mins then that's what I set. ⭐Soups etc can be left simmering for an hour or more all safely. The trick is to ensure the hob you choose has a good range of heat settings including the low simmer. I've no patience to stand over my cooking for ages which means I wander off🧘♂️🧚 and forget about the pans.🙈😧 Luckily, after a while there will be a little PEEP, which will have me running back to check if if might be dinnertime.😋
Of course, they do say Salad is a healthy option this time of year. The supermarket will have a range of cooked meats, even fresh roasted so you don't need to starve.
You could get a comfy chair to use in the kitchen if there is space, or even a barstool to encourage you to stay with your cooking?
Or order food in, if you can afford it?
This time of year is particularly foggy and snoozy for the ME CFS Fibro sorts. Easy to drift off or just feel unmotivated. However, if you are truly concerned you have an actual memory issue, talk to your GP or Nurse at the surgery to see what they think.
Hi, I see that as well as the memory problems you have previously mentioned being very tired as well as having stomach issues, plus that you have children and have had surgery. I wonder if you had nitrous oxide for childbirth and/or surgery? I would suggest looking at any blood test results that you have for your full blood count (MCV, MCH, RDW, Hb) and serum B12 and serum folate. If not done, this would be good to ask for. Nitrous is only one of many reasons why your B12 might not be good (it inactivates a large % of your stored B12). I'm sure you know, but please don't take oral supplements as you may need injections to reliably treat a deficiency, and oral will just obscure testing. You could also ask for a homocysteine test. There are plenty of things that can be done to assist memory and fatigue. You might find this interesting pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl... Best wishes
Hello, I have been known too leave things on the stove 🤣and I find now husband is now checking me , a timer is a great idea and I ordered 2 off eBay in case I break one, days where I do not feel well with my fibro I am very forgetful so any off days I keep indoors and never drive my car locally. I thought about making a meal twice and freeze one ,ie Shephards pie, casserole , lasagne, chilli , my husband won’t cook 😏xx
Definitely set reminders, I have to do this for everything, even my medications! My memory gets worse on flare up days.I've started doing crosswords again to help and I am finding it helpful, although I find doing the crosswords alot harder than I used to but it gives my brain a boost!
Unfortunately it's just another symptom of Fibromyalgia and you will always have it. If you're that bad though, reminders will definitely help you, especially when you are cooking to help keep you safe xx
Hi Noura, yes I have been having issues with brain fog even before the other symptoms came up with fibromyalgia. Brain fog was my first symptom. That was over 35yrs ago. Anyway recently my memory has been worse oh having no memory of doing things like writing a check mailing it off to my daughter and later ordering Christmas gifts then sending more money because some items were out of stock and told her to use that money to buy something else for Christmas because the other things were no longer in stock. I was going through my bank statement and saw what I had done. This is not the normal fibro fog. Something else is going on. We know what is normal and what isn’t from our day to day lives. I am sorry I don’t know what to do nor have I any advice on how to fix this. I did start back to taking the Namanda which my new neurologist told me to stop taking. As my pastor says frequently “I am ready to go home, come Lord Jesus!”. “This is not my home”. I have burnt food in the bottom of the pot on numerous occasions but haven’t done much cooking in the last year or so because of standing and increased pain. 🤗💜🙏🏼🕊️
The dreaded ‘fibro fog’! I find it so frustrating at times especially coming up to 77 soon. People start to think one is going or gone senile! No it’s that darn fibro fog especially when fibro is playing up and I’m under stress knowing I need to get things done. I’ve had fibromyalgia for years which seems to affect everything in my body. I’ve found doing as mmuch research concerning fibromyalgia has helped me to try to worry about the symptoms too much but treat is as a flipping nuisance.mI still play my piano but not like Inuse to as I have 2 thoracic signal fractures. Last one Nov 2023 and still waiting for an appt for the osteoporosis clinic. Our nhs is in a crisis so once one is over a certain age one tends to be out on the back burner. Fortunately I have a medical background, retired of course at my age, but it helps to understand and cope.
My husband does the cooking now not because of the fibro fog but he thinks I do enough in the house. He also suffers from fibro so we are a right pair. Fibro seems to affect people in different and many ways and worry and stress can make it worse. I use to teach relaxation techniques as a counsellor so try to try my own techniques on myself. I had a brilliant doctor sadly now retired and she respected my knowledge and efforts to manage my health.
Remember learn as much as you can from reliable sources about fibro as it does put one’s mind at rest but any worries consult one’s doctor of course. My thoughts are with you and all those that suffer from this horrible disease.
