High blood pressure medication and fibro

Hi all hope everyone is OK today. The gp has decided I need blood pressure tablets , I have been on them 2 weeks and feel awful. I had a cold but that's gone, this is like a really really bad flare up. I didn't feel ill with hbp and I never go near the gp. The consultant had requested 6monthly blood tests from the doctors and the nurse thought she had better check BP while she was at it. Has anybody else had a bad reaction from amlodipine?

Hi there, may I ask how high your BP was? Amolodipine makes me feel horrible and my legs and feet swell up badly.

There is a whole range of BP meds to try so don't feel put off or that you have to suffer. If it doesn't settle down soon. May I suggest you go back and let your GP know xx

BP was 179 over90 at the doctors but was 195 over something at the hospital 2 years earlier. GP must have forgotten to read consultant's letter.

Like momo says, if side effects don't settle speak to your gp. I'm on Ramipril for mine - like you I had no symptoms and my hbp was picked up at regular check up.

I had a bad reaction to it my feet were so swollen I could barely walk, they have changed me to Ramapril now and everything is all good. Hope this helps xx

I'm on Amlodipine, and get on fine with it. I didn't get on with ramapril though, it made me cough. Can I ask though, did they prescribe you medication after checking your blood pressure once?

Or did they give you a blood pressure monitor to take home and use twice a day for a week?

Hi Bertie the consultant at the hospital sent the gp a letter over 2 years ago asking for 6 monthly blood tests and telling the gp to deal with the blood pressure it was 195 over something at the hospital then 179 over 90 2 years later at the doctors and the doctor was going on about cholesterol. I have to take my blood pressure daily and email results to doctors. I have a BP machine at home I used to have to take my Mums daily. I really can't be bothered with GPS anymore

I also have high blood pressure. My GP tried a number of different medications before we found one that reduced my blood pressure and which I could tolerate. I could not take Amlodopine and in fact I believe it is no longer prescribed in some countries due to adverse reactions. I am now on Candesartan, and have been for a number of years. It is effective with no side effects (for me). I have 6 monthly blood tests. You need to go back to GP and ask him to try something else.

Keep going and good luck! ❤️😄

Hi there, I've never heard of it. Mine was a bit high... unusual for me. The meds the doc suggested to me made me feel odd. So I asked if it was okay to take aspirin daily, she said fine if the others make you feel ill. So that what I did.

Hi, yes. I also have Fibromyalgia and felt really ill after being on Amlodipine for only 10 days. I stopped taking it, 3 days later felt fine but still have anxiety and tinnitus. Meant to starting on Felodipine but when I read user reports of side effects I would rather stay off them. My BP today was 155/84 but after I went for a half mile walk it was 190/89! I am trying to lose weight but have no appetite so as a result I am not eating balanced meals. I feel depressed about probably never having another partner (I'm 74) but have energy when gardening, driving etc. I really don't know whether to risk heart attack/stroke or take tablets which have such bad side effects.

please tell me this chat is still active!? I have been going out of my mind! I was swapped to amlodopine and got sick with flu symptoms and never recovered that was back in October and we’re almost in February! I’m in agony daily and need help!

I still feel horrid it has to be the amlodopine.

Haven’t you had any answers yet? I’ve been seeing the gp literally on a weekly basis crying in pain! There’s not much online to go off either is there. My symptoms are- constant all over body aches like typical flu symptoms, body cramps, awful chest pains, twitching in my eyes, face and fingers, breathlessness, weakness, exhaustion and bad short term memory loss, first bite syndrome. Do you match any of these? I didn’t get any of these before the medication.

That's what I have all the Time without the BP meds. With the amplodine it's intensified. I didn't take them for a few weeks but it didn't make a difference either way, until I told my husband and he freaked saying I will have a stroke . I'm falling over more I don't know if it's the meds or fibro sorry I'm no help besttrythe doctors again, I can't be bothered going or they will want more tests and it feels like a waste of time

Yeah I stopped the meds for a little while too convincing myself that it would go away if I stopped them, and like you said it didn’t make a difference. Just more anxiety of having a stroke as my bp was always around 140 over 110 before the amlodopine. They are refusing to change it though for some reason. I’ve been referred to a specialist a few days ago after uncountable blood tests so I will keep you updated here if I get any answers. I hope you’re doing okay, it triggers depressive episodes also when you’re in so much pain. Good luck!
