I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last year and I am on medication that helps my mental health and torso pain but my shoulders and knees are still very painful. My arm mobility is very limited and I cannot bend my knees all the way. Sleeping is hard as my shoulders are so bad. And I get cramps in my legs and feet often at night. Has anyone else have this experience?

Hi there, welcome to the weird and not so wonderful world of fibromyalgia. What you are experiencing is the norm for most if not all of us who suffer with fibro.
I see you are new to our group. Let me wish you a very warm welcome 😊
Hi and welcome to the club nobody particularly wants to be in.
As Dizzy says it may well be fibro but if these symptoms are new to you then it may be worth consulting the GP. I had bad shoulder pain and ignored it until it was absolutely unbearable and it turned out to be calcific tendonitis.
Magnesium spray may help with the cramps or epsom salt baths. If you haven't had your vitamin D levels checked then it may be an idea to ask for a blood test as low vit D can lead to muscle pains and cramps. To be honest fibro just keeps us all guessing where the next pain is going to be and for how long.
Hi there, definitely agree with everyone magnesium spray is well worth a try, there is also a magnesium joint spray that may be helpful on your shoulder and knees. You might find a weighted blanket helpful too 😊
I fell on my left shoulder 2 years ago. Mri showed a torn rotator cuff, tendinitis, bursitis and osteoarthritis. I was offered an operation to fix however I was told that it may not work and I would have to go through 8 weeks of pain and not be able to drive. In the 2 years the pain has gotten better and the healing also. Due to also suffering 2 heart attacks in the past 3 years I decided not to have the operation because the risk was to high.In the last year I have also developed osteoarthritis in my left shoulder so sleep is limited.
The only thing that has helped my pain which is actually mostly in my feet and legs is being prescribed 20micrograms buprenorphine patches which stay on for 7 days.
Are your pillows ok? I find I need the bottom one slightly in front of the top one to give my neck and head support and then it makes my shoulder more comfortable. I am a side sleeper so also put a pillow between my knees and I hug a pillow to and this helps my shoulders and keeps my spine aligned. These pillows are squishy ones with duck down.
You can also try voltarol gel for pain relief, they do a couple of different strengths. Try a hot shower, get a shower stall and sit underneath with hot water on your shoulders.
Hello and welcome. So hard to get comfortable and finding ways to help with pain. I do use an ibuprofen rub on gel on my shoulder blades , knees , lower back as can help in this cold weather. If I am resting then its a good old fashioned hot water bottles /or wheat bag in micowave. I really do have too have a comfy mattress as that makes so much difference for me, so worth trying out some if you were able too, the current one I have you feel as if you slightly sink into it (tempur memory foam) they say we spend a third of our lives in our beds but for fibro sufferers I would say that could be higher. Are you able to bath ? I do feel a difference with my body if I miss a day it differently relaxes my muscles etc xx
I also have problems with my joints. I suffer from shoulder joint dislocations, impacting my hand and arm. Then my left knee becomes painful with movement. I have been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, hypermobility type and I have fibromyalgia too. I have come across a lot of people with both conditions. You may need to see a Rheumatologist, they can diagnose?
I'd definitely make an appointment with the GP re your shoulder. If range of movement as well as pain is an issue it could well be frozen shoulder. I'm suffering with this at the moment and it has been agonising. Make sure you push for a referral to orthopaedics/muscular-skeletal rather than a pain clinic as my GP insisted on originally. I ended up paying to see a consultant and specialist physo privately to get my diagnosis. An increase to my anti-inflammatory med and gabapentin has helped get the pain under control as long as I don't move my arm beyond it's 30 degree Rom. Also paying to have regular massage with a sports physio which has helped. I have finally got an nhs appointment in a couple of weeks so hope I will get a guided steroid injection through that route.
But been told that while the good news is that frozen shoulder will get better the bad news is that it can take 2-3 years to heal. And fibro will make it likely to be at three end of that timescale. As with most things better to be diagnosed and start physio, have injections etc early on - so the sooner you go to the GP the better!
Of course it may not be frozen shoulder but no harm in checking - too easy to put everything down as fibro.
Hi there, I have cervical spondylosis as well as Fibromyalgia. I empathise with you the pain is excruciating especially at night. I use hot water bottles and a wheat bag. Then helps especially with foot and leg cramps and again I used hot water bottles and recently thermal socks.
I was sent to the neuroskeletal person twice and on both occasions sent away as he could not help. I am awaiting an appointment for the pain clinic.
I see an aromatherapist for a deep massage, which helps. I have also been to an osteopath and had acupuncture. All help but become expensive.
Tai Chi really helps ( gentle type) Hope you get some relief.
