Hi Alice

We all tend to blame the dreaded fibro for all our aches and pains. However it could well be something different. I ignored my shoulder pain for ages doing the usual oh it's just fibro. When I finally went to the doctor and had an x-ray it turned out to be calcific tendonitis. Please see your GP just to make sure it's not something that is easily remedied.

Hi Alice, yes, probably the fib, I get shoulder pain a lot, it's one of the trigger points as well, I have to have bra shoulder straps on very loose.

But like dinkie said doesn't hurt to see Dr to make sure

Shoulder pain got me down the Dr’s, I struggled with bra straps and shoulder bags, my muscles can’t cope with the pressure of straps or weight of a bag. If I need to use a bag I try to use a crossbody one. Also strapless bras.

In fact it was the reason why I knew something was wrong with my body before my fibromyalgia diagnosis, not being able to wear bra straps was ridiculous for me.

I always wear lightweight clothing too, but in a silly moment last week I bought a beautiful blouse from RI, but it had heavy buttons on the shoulders, utility style, I need to return it, because if I wear it for any length of time my muscles are going to ache twice as much! Shame as such a smart classy blouse.

If you don’t think it’s your bra creating the pain, then surely it’s wise to see a Dr for advice on what it could be.

Good luck Alice😊

Hello there, I agree with Dinkie get checked out , your right we do tend too blame a lot on fibro , I get measured every year as wearing the wrong bra size or wrong support is not helpful and yes bra s can cost a lot of money, I hope you can get too the bottom of this very soon and take care xx

Mine turned out to be bursitis and I needed an ultra sound guided steroid injection. Absolutely nothing to do with Fibromyalgia. As we all say, not everything is related to fybromyalgia. Also maybe your bra straps maybe too tight. I have mine on very lightly. Always best to get checked out by a gp. So that possible causes are ruled out.

Best wishes

I have shoulder issues - have done for years. The pain comes and goes, sometimes lasting weeks, even months. It’s often the right shoulder that’s affected most, though I can get pain in my upper left arm which may also be shoulder related. In my case it’s not straightforward as to what may be the cause as I have hypermobility issues as well as Fibro and the right shoulder in particular was identified as being very unstable years ago; it can (and does) sublux - most recently resulting in rotator cuff damage.

As others have said, you really need to get that shoulder looked at. The pain you are experiencing could be down to any number of things.

Hi Alice, I would follow up with your doctors. If this is outside the normal fibromyalgia pain it needs to be checked out. For the last 2-3months I have been having this weird screaming pain in my right upper back just below my shoulder. Didn’t injure that I can recall. Long story short I will be going to a physical therapy who does dry needling (never had this before) I see my doctor next Wednesday for pain management. My naturalist doctor sent me some traumeel cream to put on it and I picked up some CBD gummies to take on days that I work as a last line of defense against the pain. It knocks it down from a 10 to an 8 on the pain scale. This isn’t the normal fibromyalgia pain. The tramadol and muscle relaxants works for the fibromyalgia pain but was not touching the back pain. Please follow up with your doctors and be the squeaky wheel. I’m not good at being the squeaky wheel so went longer in pain than I should have gone.

hi Alice, OH YES!! I haven’t been able to wear a bra due to it causing immense pain around my shoulder blade area. The material of any bra lies on the area where I have damaged nerve endings. It burns and is so painful that I had to give up after as you say, spending a fortune on bras trying to find even one that doesn’t do this. I still have to work and at first I found it so embarrassing not wearing a bra( I’m not exactly small in the bust area) which makes it even worse but eventually I had to get over that feeling and accept that the pain was to unbearable and that was much more important. I wear a vest top underneath clothes and in the hot weather it can be extremely uncomfortable and uncomfortable but I can’t do anything about it so 🤷‍♀️all women know that wonderful feeling of getting home and being able to take their bra off so basically I don’t let it bother me anymore and just get on with it 🤗xx

Yes I do find that my neck and shoulders can be extremely painful. I try to do shoulder shrug up and down and rotate them backwards and forwards to try to loosen them up. Stretching out me neck either side My fibro started when I hurt my neck and most days I find it hard to turn my head. It's especially worse when I wake up in the mornings... I'm as stiff as as a board!

Hi Alice, it is highly likely to be your fibro but get anything else ruled out via a check up with your Dr. Shoulder pain is classic FM. We all get things called trigger points that are very tight painful spots in our muscles that refer pain to different parts of our body and make us feel sore and bruised almost. These are different to tender points. There are lots in the shoulder and upper back areas and they can cause lots of pain in neck shoulders, down arms etc. Look them up on the net and you will see what I am on about. Trigger points in shoulder muscles create myofascial pain. Another happy side effect of FMS. Hence Bras are simply torture instruments for folks with FM. They fit quite tight and pull on us. Part of fibro is something called allodynia which is amplification of pressure pain which is why bra straps hurt so much as they pull down on the shoulders and our FMS amplifies the pain. If you find a bra that is remotely comfortable buy six lol cos it is a rare find. I tried all sorts of bras, back fastening front fastening (hilarious if you are well endowed) and those that just pull on. All hurt a lot. In truth I only wear a bra if I really must as too darn painful. But it is the amplification thing that is making it worse so not just uncomfortable, uncomfortable x ten.

Try to rest your arms as much as possible to ease shoulder pain. rest them on a cushion whilst watching tv so they are supported and this takes the pull off your shoulders. Also in bed at night use support pillows. Always support your arm weight on something other than your shoulders. In the car I have a big round cushion to rest them on. Really helps. And massage your shoulders and neck left hand to right shoulder right to left shoulder and you will feel how sore they are. Go gently till you get used to the massage. Avoid overhead arm work like hanging out washing and reaching up and forward into cupboards. Avoid triggers like ironing. Watering cans set me off big time so I have a hose now. If you work at it you can reduce the pain but you will need to keep it up. I also use a heated wheat bag to ease the tension in neck and shoulders. Hope the above works for you. Take care.
