I’ve only just been diagnosed after several years of symptoms. I’m pretty much just mooching about here to see what’s what. However, I’ve read that a cause for fibromyalgia could possibly be from some kind of trauma. This rings true for me since I’ve not been “right” since failed surgery (I almost died) years ago and things got worse very quickly after my dad died in 2013.
Can anyone else say the same?

Hi Bazzybuggs , this has been discussed a few times on the forum and I know for me personally, even though I suspect I have had it for many years in a mild form, fibro really took hold after the death of my mum and the shocking death of another close family member. I am sure many other members have their own stories to share however I would advise that you are likely to receive more replies if you lock your post. You don't have to but many members are not too keen on responding to unlocked ones as it means the whole thread can be read by internet search engines. Instructions on how to do this can be found on the link below but if you get stuck please don’t hesitate to ask for help.
In the meantime, welcome to the forum, you will find lots of help and support from our friendly members plus there is lots of useful information and links on our main site so you may like to take a look at this at some point:
You,ve hit the nail on the head Bazzybuggs I do believe this is ONE occurance that brings on fibro- same as you, my father died in my arms aged 69, it shouldnt have happened, he had been in an induced coma for 59 days after a simple surgical procedure went wrong, I travelled up n down a motorway daily and sat with him, then went to a temporary job close by, then drove home, I did that for several months, I knew all along something was wrong with me BUT I had history of Ankylosing spondilitis and the pains i was feeling were in the same place.. It wasnt until I put him to rest I saught attention to this problem, my rheumo doc said yes the pain are in the same place B UT its in the muscles that touch the joints you refer to and its fibromyalgia not the A.S returning,, after 18 years I wished it had been A.S returning because at least i could control that pain, with fibro it has been a nightmare...
Hi Bazzy I have had failed surgery on my shoulder last august. it is more painful now, I am hoping they will put it as right as they can. waiting for mri on 8th april and go from there. so I think failed surgery is a big factor
I think mine was related to nasty viral infection, followed by death of Dad very suddenly (in same month). Not well for many years before going to see Rheumatologist, but after death of my Mum in Dec. 2015 many aspects of fibro seem to have hit me so much harder. Dunno - maybe its just me??
Hi & welcome! I think mine started after a viral infection, I got shingles followed by severe post herpetic neuralgia & now fibromyalgia. By the way I was only diagnosed in Dec, so feeling my way through things a bit.
Last January I had pneumonia which they couldn't clear up then ended up in hospital with infection in my spine- consultant said nervous system infection. Then it all got worse and worse until 2 close family bereavements both to cancer and wks of palliative care seemed to break me 😔 so for the last year I struggled assuming it was all in my head due to 'stress and loss' - diagnosed last month.
I had a few of the symptoms over a few years but I took a really bad infection/virus in December that lasted through January. Then I had a frozen shoulder and was on morphine...that made me so sick I ended up needing a blood transfusion as I was so aneamic...and then the Fibromyalgia flare up and was sent for numerous tests all clear so finally got my diagnosis end of last year
