Hey, has anybody here had an isotope bone scan? I had one on Friday and wondered how long it took for your results to be back? I'm not 100% sure what they are looking for, I think they are just ruling things out before they diagnose fibro

Hi Broomesa it's to show up bone density, well anything wrong with your bones, it's mainly used to show up arthritis though because I had one year's ago now..As you say, they are ruling everything else out because Fibro symptoms mimic so many other things.

Yes that's right Hidden I vaguely remember having some kind of dye or something like that, gosh was long time ago. It's completely painless cos I would remember it more lol xx
Hi there
I can't see any reason why you couldn't ring the department at the hospital that carried out your scan, and ask them approximately how long it generally takes for results to come through.
Hopefully they should be able to give you some sort of time frame.

I had a bone scan fairly recently it was to do wth my vitamin d deficiency actually. It came back fine thank goodness.
Hi Broomesa
I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I think that you are totally right my friend, in that they are just trying to rule out other medical conditions. I have pasted an excerpt below from the *Patient website on isotope bone scans:
*What is a bone scan used for?
*In a bone scan, a radionuclide is used which collects in areas where there is a lot of bone activity (where bone cells are breaking down or repairing parts of the bone). So a bone scan is used to detect areas of bone where there is cancer, infection, or damage. These areas of activity are seen as 'hot spots' on the scan picture.
This type of radionuclide bone scanning is also called bone scintigraphy. It is a totally different type of procedure to the DEXA bone scan which is used to measure density of bones in conditions such as 'thinning' of the bones (osteoporosis). (See separate leaflet called DEXA Scan for information about this other kind of bone scan.)
I have had multiple bone scans over the years including the DEXA scans as I have Osteopenia. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself my friend.
All my hopes and dreams for you
Ken
