Hi Willow53
Gobsmacked! I have had a couple of MRI and CT Scans and I have only ever waited a couple of weeks? I do not know what health authority area you live in but I cannot understand where your GP is coming from? Is he related to Ebeneezer Scrooge by any chance? The only issue I can fathom is money?
(Please do not name anyone or anything as I have just dissed them and it is not allowed on the forum to name somebody you have just dissed!).
I have looked at three different websites offering Private MRI's, and the cheapest was £400 and the most expensive was £1000 for a back scan (but it does not say if they are full back scans?). However, if there is any nerve damage or compression or severe tissue damage or any other issue such as spinal fluid etc the MRI should pick with this up?
I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck. Please take care of yourself.
All my hopes and dreams for you
Ken
Mri's r good but I cannot understand why your go can't request one it will show muscle bone tissue everything so yes I think it will tell you xxxx try go again before going private though as he/she should be able to refer you.
What a load of b*****ks of course he can send you for a scan without seeing a consultant first. Yes, depending on the area it can take a couple of months, but your GP is perfectly able to sign the form.
Here in Scotland you cannot be sent for an MRI without being referred by a consultant. MRIs for non emergency can take about 6-8 weeks. Depending on the area and the number of scanners I'd guess.
But if your doctor thinks you need a scan then he should be taking the appropriate steps . You need to go back and question him.
Good luck
Dee
That's what happens up here in Scotland, I have had 3knee mri scans ordered by orthopedic, in the last three years, two full body scans in the last 2years and a ct scan for my breathlessness all referred by my g.p to the different clinics and waiting time approximately 6weeks in fact one of my body scans was done in ten days due to a cancellation being available and they phoned me to come in and it was at 7pm, so I don't see why your gp can't referrer you to the right clinic and get an mri scan x
Hi
Go back to your Doctor and insist he put you on the waiting list. I was waiting to see a specialist for my bad and it was a few months waiting time so my doctor had a scan done for when I saw the specialist cuts so much waiting time out.
But to answer your question about do they show everything in my case it was No.
I had a camera put in my back when they did the decompression but to there suprise the dic above the two that had shown up on the scan was worse than the other two.
Apparently mine had gone in a different place which is very hard to show up on any scan. All I can say this is what I was told I am sure he said the back side but it's so long since.
I was told if they hadn,t put a camera in they wouldn't have seen it.
I am in the Lancashire Health authorities.
So please go back and point this out if he puts you on the list now you won't have to wait as long when you have seen the specialist .

Your upper spine can only be MRId on referral by a consultant. Your lower back can be done with a GP referral. But it all depends on what your symptoms are before any dr will refer.
To see a private consultant (which is what most private Drs are) Google your local private hospital. Find the medica discipline you need, neurosurgeon for neck and top of spine, Orthopaedic surgeon for lower down on your spine. Choose the one you think you will get the most help from by looking at their profiles, then phone the hospital to make an appointment. They will be able to tell you if you you need a GP referral or not.
Sadly if you need a referral but your GP doesn't agree then you do have a problem 🐸
Hello Willow,
As part of Patients' Choice you can ask to be referred to a private hospital for tests and diagnosis if there is a long wait on the NHS. You may wish to research this further.
For me, the MRI scan is part of the diagnosis. It may determine what sort of Consultant you get referred to. X Ray's and / or an Ultrasound scan may be helpful.
I hope that you get the support that you need.
Best wishes,
Dave
