It had to happen. They have brought back cheesecloth and smocks ha ha. To those of you under the age of 50, back in the late 70's those of us in our late teens dressed in jeans and a cheesecloth shirt, or a smock. It was the uniform of the time. It will bring back many memories for some of us 😺

Ah! But did you have a pair of balsa wood platform sandals? I loved them ha ha. It was the only time in my life I was of average height and felt tall. They had a 7 inch heel and a 4 inch platform, which was stained blue and engraved with a design. I wonder what happened to them? I should have kept them just for the giggles. These days I have to live in flatties. Back to my 5'2" ha ha ha x

I just touch 5ft so yes they were really helpful probably couldn't wear them now

Ah yes I had a pair of wooden platform sandals, not sure if they were balsa but they hurt so bad lol x

Sorebones profile image
Sorebonesβ€’ in reply tomattoid-mags

That is a bit different. Funny. I don't remember my sandals hurting. They probably did tho. My spine is screaming just at the thought of wearing something like that now ha ha x

Maybe that's why we all have pains today πŸ˜«πŸ˜“

Sorebones profile image
Sorebonesβ€’ in reply tomattoid-mags

I have a suspicion that my OA in my spine is thanks to a bad riding fall. I slammed my back when I fell and of course, kept the good old British stiff upper lip and climbed straight back on. No calling for an air ambulance in those days and the only safety equipment was a riding hat. Most of them fell off as you did because nobody would be seen dead with the chin strap in place. Plus the elastic dug into your skin.

Hindsight is such a wonderful thing lol x

Ouch, that's sounds very painful- I can almost feel it x

It most certainly was! I was stuck in the back of beyond in Swaziland at the time. I had no choice really. Either get back on or walk back. Neither was a great prospect ha ha. Sun baked dirt roads are hard. I first realised I might have done myself some damage while trying to teach a 17 year old how to headbang properly πŸ˜¬πŸ‡πŸ½πŸ‡πŸ½πŸ‡πŸ½πŸ‡πŸ½πŸ‡πŸ½

Lol headbanging? No wonder your bones are sore- I guess we all learn the hard way πŸ˜€

Lol! I loved cheesecloth then and still love it now. I've bought a couple of cheap cheesecloth tops to wear with jeans.

That probably makes me really sad, but hey ho!

Blue/Lu xx

Sorebones profile image
Sorebonesβ€’ in reply toBlueMermaid3

No way! Nothing sad about that Lu. Nothing at all. I can say that with some authority as I have bought a pair of flares. Jeans. Yep. They are selling them again ha ha. I have to laugh at the youngsters wearing them. They don't realise they are meant to trail on the ground, get filthy etc etc x

BlueMermaid3 profile image
BlueMermaid3β€’ in reply toSorebones

Lol! Me too. I have some flares too. I'm just waiting for the love beads to come back. Oh, how I loved wearing mine. They bring back some wonderful memories ☺️ Xx

Love beads. Forgotten about them. So long as they don't bring back the stinky afghan coats lol. I did get the faux fur version a couple of years ago when they came back in. Glutton for punishment.

I still love the smell of patchouli. Luckily I found a perfume that exudes patchouli. Smells sooooo much better than the oil.

As for wedges...... When not going out I lived in a pair of clogs that had a cork wedge. They were so comfy.

What was your music of choice ladies?

BlueMermaid3 profile image
BlueMermaid3β€’ in reply toSorebones

Oh my! My wooden clogs. I loved them so so much. I only got rid of them a few years ago.

I loved ALL music, but especially The Jam and Blondie 😊 xx

Sorebones profile image

Still love Blondie. I have seen her twice in the last 10 years. I flew to Brum first time and she was in Edinburgh the second. She is still great!

Don't know about you but in those days there were hundreds of girls that used to try to look like Debbie. We gave them marks out of 10 for their effort. One afternoon we were in a pub (funny that) having a bit of a session. It was the lounge bar of a big hotel. Anyway, we all gave this one girl 6 out of 10. We later found out that it WAS Debbie Harry. She was staying in the hotel as she was playing a gig there 😽

Ooooh. Forgot about the denim waistcoat and the scarf tied round my neck! That knot at a jaunty angle at the side ha ha ha 😜

The smocks used to look so pretty and sweet, especially the ones with the rows of embroidery on and the cheesecloth looked pretty and fresh. I hated ironing it though. Happy days. Lol.

I so want a cheesecloth shirt we were talking today about it and I said they've bought back suede skirts so hopefully cheesecloth shirts will come back. Where are they selling them?

Sorebones profile image
Sorebonesβ€’ in reply tosnappy1

In Matalan. Don't look like the ones we knew. They have some pattern on them, in a sort of smock shape. Not the lovely stripey ones. Wish they would bring them back.

They seem intent on trying to do the 70's but with a " modern" twist. It's not working. Don't think they are brave enough to try the original styles. I look at M&S and their 70's efforts. Just ask Twiggy..... She was there...... Not so difficult. Duh 😜

Definitely brings back memories, not that I use to wear girls clothing? I had the big bell bottom trousers and almost florescent socks?

Thanks for sharing my friend.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Hadn't thought about men's clothes in the 70's. They were even worse than the ladies ha ha. What about brothel creepers? The revamp of the 50's Classic, big thick rubbery soles, aaarrrgggghhhh. My OH had a lumber jacket. Remember them?

It was a bit much for a short a#%€ like me when guys wore platforms. Enough to give a girl an inferiority complex.

One of the girls I knew had her hair dyed tartan. It took the hairdresser two weeks to complete. Her hair was down her back nearly to the waist. You would never guess she was a Bay City Rollers fan.

All of that brings back some memories, especially the guys shoes as they were OTT!

Oh yes. I'd forgotten about those shirts. I lived in mine ha ha. I still love culottes.

Simon shirts!! Unisex clothing........

Have you seen the patchwork denim jeans around? They took me back a bit. I had a patchwork skirt. I spilled acid on it in a chemistry class on made a hole. It was ok though as I just added another patch lol πŸ˜ƒ

We could easily 'go retro' if we still had them ha ha. Don't think mine would fit any more mind you. Wonder whatever happened to bus stop? I think Chelsea girl is still on the go.....
