Blog about Holiday August 2014

Hi everyone,

I haven't written a blog post for a while and I just wanted to share my holiday experience with you all. We went to Blackpool on 4th August - 8th August 2014. Just 4 nights for me, my husband and children. We stayed at the Hesketh Hotel (link attached) which is past the north pier in Blackpool in a area called Bispham. It was lovely and quiet. The hotel is accessible for disabled people as it is a ramp in to the building and a lift goes to all floors. The only downside is that my wheelchair which is a manual one so the type where someone pushes me. I used my crutches to get in the lift up to the room. So I guess if you can walk a small distance to the lift then it's suitable for you. The room we stayed in was a family room, so a double bed, bunk beds and then a single bed (the kids had a lot fun choosing which one they would have). The breakfast that we had each day was absolutely marvellous. Myself and my daughter can't eat white bread because of digestive problems so the night before where we checked in I asked the landlady if she had any brown bread. She said that she hadn't at that moment but there would be some available in the morning. Guess what? There was. You could choose from cereal, toast or a cooked breakfast or have all three if you wanted. The table was laid beautifully. There was a glass of orange juice set out and a fresh pot of tea, which they refilled if you wanted more. They gave you more toast if you wanted it. They were just superb and nothing was too much trouble for them.

The hotel does have very good parking, but we only used our car to go to the places that I had found for us to go for our tea. The hotel owners told us about a daily tram ticket that you can get for each day but get on and off the tram as many times as you like during that day. We decided to use the tram to go out fro the full days that we were there. So that was Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We had to use the car to get to Blackpool Zoo. We didn't get there until the afternoon. I had booked our tickets on the internet and made a saving so my carer (who is also my husband) could get in for free. We found problems straight away when we got there. I don't know if you ever been there before but we started off in the dinosaur Safari part which the kids loved, but the paths were very narrow and not wide enough for people to pass by us so we had to move over for them walk and vice versa. We got through all of that and ended up in a huge space with an activity play thing for the children and a cafe. We could see the monkeys from a distance. We went up a very large hill to see the Giraffes (my favourite animal) but I wished to get closer. I couldn't get in to see the tigers because there were so many people in that space I simply could not get through them all. That was a problem for me through out the visit really. Myself and my husband felt that the signage wasn't enough, paths that lead us to animals were not wide enough and my daughter wanted to see the Zebra's so my son who is almost 12 went with her; following the signs but they couldn't find them. Before 2009 I probably would of had a brilliant time and enjoyed it better because I was well then. Having to go through life now in a wheelchair (I'm not stuck in it but that is what I have to use to go out anywhere simply because of how much my mobility has changed with having Fibro, M.E. and a nerve condition that affects my whole body. I suppose you can say that I can see life from two perspectives really. Before my illness I could do anything I wanted with no restrictions. I can't do that anymore.

On Wednesday we went to the Sea Life Centre, that was amazing. There were so many fun things to do. There was a lift for us to use and the pathways were nice and wide, we could get past easily. I'd definitely recommend that to you. The trams are easily accessible and great for disabled access and everything. On the Thursday we went to the Pleasure beach. I got really upset that day because I would of given anything to go back on rollercoaster rides. I was sitting in the sun waiting for them all to come off the rides. I was able to see them on the Log Flume which was a lot of fun as my daughter had never been on one before and she loved it.

Overall we loved our holiday to Blackpool and so many places were easily accessible and I'd recommend them to everyone.

If you want further information about the hotel that I stayed at, then please message me on here as I have had to take the link down.

Many gentle hugs to you all.

Kimberley

Hi babebatista

I sincerely hope that you are feeling well today? It sounds like you all had a wonderful time. I have not been to Blackpool for a long, long time, so it has probably changed a lot since I was last there? I had a look at the link and I really liked the look of the brown bedroom area (the pictures that keep changing), it looked very modern and spaces.

I have noticed that with many of the modern attractions, although they are disability friendly it would appear that space is always at a premium for access? Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.

All my hopes and dreams for you

The rooms look very spacious I will pass it onto my friend who loves Blackpool and taking her grandchildren there. I am so glad that you enjoyed your holiday, pity about some of the places that you found weren't as accessible as you would have likedx

So glad you enjoyed your holiday. It is a sorry tale for me as my sister lives in Blackpool and I have yet to get over to visit her. I really must make the effort :)

If you are looking to visit your sister there are a really good couple of hotels that have lifts to all floors. I can message you in a minute as I saw a hotel advertised that they said brilliant for disabled people. I'm glad we only stayed 4 nights because I was in a lot of pain most days but so glad that I had all my meds with me. I made sure that I had rested the whole week until the Monday we left. We also went at a slow and steady pace. It is hard though. I had previously said it's too difficult for us to go on holiday because of my new situation, but we managed it. I went to Blackpool when I was 10 on holiday and I loved it. It has a special place in my heart and previously we had only gone to see the lights, but then it's cold, went and windy (not good for me) so quite glad we had lovely weather. I will message you with the name of that hotel now xxx gentle hugs xxx

really enjoyed reading about your holiday and that you were able to create some good memories for you and your family.

Drove through Blackpool once and never wanted to go there again but you made it sound fun.

Thank you Betty. I was a bit nervous about it for a while because a lot has changed personally since my last holiday. I have to make sure that I have my wheelchair and or walker and or crutches with me and then all of my medication and everything else. I'm just glad that for ease and comfort it was great. xxx
