I am now taking melatonin 3mg, it helps me get to sleep but not to stay asleep which has always been my biggest problem. I did take amitriptyline for a long time but eventually the side-effects became too problematic. What do you take and does it work and what side-effects have you experienced?
I take 75mg dosulepin and 0.5mg clonezapam the clonezapam is for muscle spasms...been taking them for 18 months now and I have no side effects at all and 7 hours sleep straight. Through every night.... I still get flare ups but everything is so much more manageable with sleep... Sorry if I sound smug but have had fibro 23 years and this last 18 months has been wonderful regards sleep
i was taking amitriptyline but couldnt believe how much i was sleeping and so have just changed to nortriptyline yesterday, admittedly only 10 mg, but its definitely doing the trick. while on ami, i was struggling to get up before 1pm, got up at 9am, no problems.
I also take Clonazepam which also helps with bladder spasm as I have Instititial cystitis - one of fibros nasty friends - but i don't sleep that well with it and I don't want to increase the dose, so I listen to a boring talking book through earphones which doesn't disturb OH - something like Catch 22 or at the moment Homer's Oddessy is truly, truly boring. Then with a boring book I keep dozing and waking and in the morning I feel as if I have had a good sleep. But I listened to a book about Cleopatra recently and it was so exciting at the end that I stayed awake from 1am till 4.30am!!!! And then I felt so alert thinking of the story that I had to get up and make a drink to calm down before I could go back to sleep again. I never knew about her and everything we hear is really myth - she was great and so much influenced the emancipation of women.
Can I suggest something really gentle? Bananas, Turkey meat and lettuce all have soporific effects. If I'm sleepless, I'll have something like a banana or a turkey and Lettuce sarnie, along with a milky drink such as Ovaltine or Horlicks. Preferably an hour or so before retiring. Works for me every time!
Cheers, Midori
Hi
Being veggie rather rules out the turkey meat lol but thanks for the info.
I dont actually take meds to sleep, but take 300mg gabapentin in the morning and afternoon and 400mg at night for peripheral neuropathy in feet legs and hands, and it knocks me out so I get a sleep. If I forget to take it at night I am awake all night in pain. Only thing is it makes me tired during the day as well. but I'd rather that than get no sleep.
