Scan for monitoring follicles

Hi everyone,

I’m due to have my egg collection middle of next month, and my clinic only want to scan me two days before the potential day of egg collection. They said it’s because my AMH is below 20 (14.5) I had a laparoscopy and removal of ovarian cysts so it’s made my AMH drop. But just wanted to know if this was everyone else’s experience?

Is 1 scan enough? I’m sure I will be fine but it just all makes you panic doesn’t it, just want the best possible outcome.

Thanks all 😊

Not a doctor but I’ve never heard of this. I just went through retrieval and I had I had 3 ultra sounds min during the week before retrieval one at base line two the week after then 3 the week prior with the last one being Saturday before the Tuesday retrieval .. also blood work go check hormone levels every time .. something doesn’t sit well with me about your doctors orders

Yeah I’m thinking it seems a bit lax. I have questioned it about 4 times to various people and they all just tell me that it is the norm for AMH under 20. It was 32 in November so has more than halved after my op. I have had an egg collection in 2019 already and had multiple scans then. I might question it once more as that is what happened with the cysts I had, they told me they wouldn’t scan me as they wouldn’t have gotten bigger, but I insisted and they had grown. So one size doesn’t always fit all does it! Thanks for replying

Hi Booda21!I would have thought you’d have plenty more but this might be due to your AMH level.

I’ve had 6 in the past 2 weeks and my EC is this morning - think it was to monitor me of any risks.

However there’s different methods and protocols for everyone and each clinic.

All the best x

Yeah that’s what I’ve been thinking, it’s different for all. And in my previous egg collection my AMH was much higher and I definitely had more scans. I think sometimes I just feel very dismissed by my clinic with my concerns so it can be quite frustrating! Hope your egg collection went well yesterday and you’re not feeling too bad 🤍

Yes, very true - dismissed is the right word.

I had my EC and it completely wiped me out! I’ve never felt pain like that bearing in mind I’ve had a SB a while back. The night before I couldn’t take deep breaths nor bend. Now after, I can’t walk because of shooting pain across my abdomen. They’ve said my symptoms are similar to OHSS but it isn’t because I can still go to the loo to wee but not for number 2 yet and that I should keep an eye on it.

I don’t want to scare anyone. I was not prepared at all after reading stories of girls going in and going straight back to work etc 🥴😔🥺

I had similar after my egg collection, I could only lie in one particular position, my shoulder tip pain was actually worse than from laparoscopy. I couldn’t do any of those things either in terms of moving and had to take more time off than I had planned. And was exactly the same as you just didn’t expect it. I had egg collection on a Wednesday and felt loads better by Saturday and back to normal by Sunday. So hopefully it won’t last too long for you. Hopefully it will all be worth it. Just rest and recover now xx

I’m sorry to hear that, I’m glad you got better. I really wish this pain goes away, I’ve got work on Monday and a house to maintain 😭

Did you have to take injections after your EC?

Hi, I had 3 treatment scans before EC, they done to them to see if my follicles were responding to the treatment and if they were growing! I believe they need to do this incase you need a drug dose increase. They also took bloods too to check levels were all good. My AMH was 8.2. 1 scan doesn’t really seem enough so close to EC.xx

Yeah that’s what I thought. I have had one egg collection previously but they definitely scanned me more then. And I did have to have 2 more days of stims. I don’t think my clinic do bloods at scans, but I could be wrong. I just think sometimes they’re so blasé and don’t realise what it is like for you not being in the know on everything. Hopefully they know what they’re doing. But I will question it again! Thanks for the reply 😊

Yes defo question it, if something doesn’t sit right with you always ask the question! It’s your body and your chance that I can imagine you’ve spent a lot of money on. Good luck xx

I usually only have one scan. If they think you'll respond and not over respond by the time of the scan that could be why. All clinics are different x

Yeah I think they must think this. Although they also seem to not know stuff which is clearly in my notes, for example that I need a freeze all cycle. When speaking to one of the nurses she was like ‘who told you that, it’s not here’ even though I was told by two separate consultants that this has to be done due to my window of implantation not fitting with a fresh transfer. So it all gets a bit frustrating. But yes you’re right, hopefully they are doing the right thing. Thanks for replying 😊

They can’t really schedule you in for egg collection until they see how you are responding so it’s not the number of scans I would be questioning (as one might be enough and your follicles are exactly where they need to be) it’s how they can predict now when your egg collection will be? Roughly that week yeah but they exact day a month before ? Never heard of that personally! I think I had 2 scans for first egg collection and 3 for second as they weren’t quite behaving as they should (some growing fast, some slow) defo ask more questions as it’s their job to explain the what’s and why’s to you do you understand what’s happening to you and your body xx

Yeah they give you the date but say it could change by 2/3 days. They scan you two days before to see if I need the trigger or more stims but no monitoring before this. Which on my last cycle I had more scans to check everything. I have questioned the number of scans about 3 or 4 times already but just feel like they’re quite dismissive every time I ask. So I feel a bit stupid and like I’m being an awkward pain. But it just feels all a bit last minute too. Thanks for replying 🤗

I only had one scan prior to starting the stims on cd 1-4 of cycle to make sure it was an optimal cycle then one the morning they were thinking of triggering/2 days before collection. First cycle I needed 2 days more stims so I got another scan 2 days later and got 12 usable eggs. I got bloods monday wednesday fridays as well

Yeah they just have the one scan prior to potential egg collection to see if I need to trigger or more stims. Last time I had more scans and also needed two more days of stims. So I’m all a bit anxious about it. Like it’s very last minute and I’m not being monitored properly. I don’t think that they seem to understand how we as the patients don’t understand every single thing and when asking questions are sometimes made to feel awkward or stupid. I will question this again I think as it is stressing me out a bit. It’s not exactly a big deal just to do one more scan is it to put someone’s mind at rest. It’s routine for the clinic what they’re doing but it’s a huge deal to us and wanting the best outcome! Congrats on the 12 eggs, great numbers 🤗

I had one scan on day 10. It was suggested that the doctors may want to scan 2 days later, but they put me on one more day because they couldn’t retrieve on a Sunday and triggered. I know other clinics scan at 8 days. I didn’t have any over grown follicles.
