travelling with meds question

hi I’m going on holiday abroad on Monday ☀️ ✈️ and need to take my clexane and lubion injections with me (and pessaries and progynova) the hospital gave me a letter today for the airport as they said they shouldn’t go in the hold and had to go in hand luggage (due to the low temps in the hold) which I hadnt even thought about until now!

I am travelling with my family (mum, dad, brother, sister their partners) and they dont know we are trying again! And I’d thought about the not drinking excuses and time away to do my pessaries and injections excuses etc but can anyone tell me what actually happens at security with these meds? Do they take all the meds out is it a big song and dance or is there anyway I’m going to be able to get through discreetly without my family noticing the meds situation!? 🫣🤪 first world problems I know sorry but I know you lovely ladies will tell me straight if it’s possible or I’m going to have to pretend to be late to the airport or something! Can they defo not go in the hold??? 🫣🫣

Ps last wee frostie on board today ✨ and test date when we are away (so will need to take pregnancy test too!) 💜xx

I took mine in hand luggage and didn’t even take out the bag. No issues

Hi Twiglet2, the couple of times I have travelled with medication I have put all the meds (including lubion, needles etc) in a little toilet bag in my carry on luggage with the letter in there too. I have taken that bag out and put it next to liquids but also I have just left the bag in and fired my whole bag through the scanner. Never been stopped, never questioned. Hopefully you have the same experience! x

Perfect fingers crossed that’s what happens! Thank you xx

All the best - taken mine in hand luggage and no concerns

I have done this quite a few times and in my case British airport staff usually wanted them all out. One guy opened every box and touched everything to compare it with the letter. The Greek airport staff couldn't care less they read the letter and just had a quick look in the bag. As for the temperature in the hold. I brought back a ton of lubion in April (much cheaper there) and had it in the hold. I have used some of it since then and there was no issue but I will check since you mentioned it.

Thanks lovely 🥰 I was thinking neither of the injections have a specific temp on them just the pessaries not to be too warm but they just said all meds in hand luggage today xx

I spoke to a pharmacist and I did a quick Google search. The temperatures in the hold are generally a little lower than in the cabin and not freezing. Some say about 7 degrees. So I guess my lubion boxes are fine 🙂

Aww brilliant thank you!! Xx

Every time I have done it I have quietly spoken to the person dealing with the plastic trays at security and explained there were sharps/drugs and flashed the letter and that was enough, they didn't take them out once xx

Ah thank you I think I will try and go at the back and do that 🤗 xx

Same for me, very little fuss…none of them looked in my bag, and just about glanced at the letter 🤣 very blasé about the whole thing! Yes go last and everyone else will be too busy sorting themselves out.

Have a lovely holiday ☀️

Hi lovely I just put all my meds in the hold luggage with a letter except the ones I needed to take at the airport it was 2 flights back from north Cyprus and they was fine same meds as you mentioned your taking sending you loads of baby dust your way good luck lovely x

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toLana89

Ah so they said lubion and clexane fine in the hold of the plane and don’t need to be on the carry on? The nurse that told me about it is known to be a bit OTT if it had been any other nurse I wouldn’t have questioned it but this one doesn’t fill me with confidence 🤪🤭 xx

Aww brilliant thank you! Calms me down a little, I’m gonna look nervous like I’m smuggling something at this rate 🤣🤣 xx

I wouldn't put all your meds in the hold though - imagine the stress if your case goes missing!

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toEmzy12580

Yeah defo I did think about that and was originally going to spread them across our 3 hold cases in case of that but didn’t know they maybe shouldn’t go in the hold at all! Xx

When I traveled with my meds, I had them in a small bag in my carry-on and breezed through security with no questions.

As for keeping it discreet from your family, you could go through security separately. Maybe you could suggest going through security a bit earlier or later than your family. Another option is to pre-pack your meds in a small, organized bag within your carry-on, so you can easily show it to security without making a scene.

Good luck! x

Thank you! We have our little boy with us so they will want to see him as soon as we get to the airport and some of us travelling in to the airport together etc but I will see if I can hang back alone somehow but then I won’t be able to help with the wee man and no doubt he will be a good distraction somehow. I will try what you did and put them in a seperate small bag and hope they dont say anything. I need to take a lot of needles though as its 2 injections. A day for 10 days and the lubion needs 2 needles for prep (but actually I’m assuming those can go in the hold so it will just be the clexane that has the ‘sharp’ part!) 🤪 xx

Very good morning, I have taken my gonal f pen with needles :) and Progesteron between Zurich and London on both British and Swiss airlines in hand luggage without problems. Medicine usually not considered to be a part of the liquids and has no restrictions. I have taken those in the original box and also got prescription copy with me. I have placed those in a tray as usual.

I would go maybe last and get a bit lost in the crowd, or ask them to go first and get me some water.

Good luck and have a good trip xx

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toGentleblue

Thanks, yeah I know they are allowed (and I have a letter) but hoping they didn’t have to go out into the tray and be discussed much as then everyone would see them!! Yikes I hope I don’t have to do that as others seem to have gone though with them still in the bag xx

Gentleblue profile image
Gentleblue in reply toTwiglet2

Wow that's amazing if you can just leave all in the bag! I am overthinking too much as usual :) Hope all goes well xx

Hi Twiglet2, I hope you have a lovely time away!

I took mine in my bag last month and they security didn’t even check or nothing beeped! They just went straight through so hopefully you will be okay 🙏 good luck!

Xxx

Twiglet2 profile image

Yay exactly what I was hoping to hear! Did you have needles too? Xx

Lauren80 profile image
Lauren80

Yes I had the two needles for the lubion and the needle box, I put that in my mini case for the hold and I got pulled up on security for some talc/ baby powder but all my long needles and lubion they didn’t take any notice of 🤣 xx

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toLauren80

🤣 Jeezo! Thanks so much 🤗💜 xx

I bought a little insulated bag to keep them in. I didn’t need ice packs or anything, but the bag helped keep everything at room temperature 😊 I also tested when we were on holiday!

Also, what you could do is pay for priority security and don’t tell them 😜 then you can go through to a completely separate area 😊 xx

Twiglet2 in reply toMarshmellowMountain

Hmm good shout! I wonder if we get that with our car parking actually! we get to go in the family line anyways at edinburgh because of the buggy so never need it but my wider family jump in with us 🤣 (cheeky buggers!)

I have done both- had injections with checked-in luggage for longer time away and also in hand luggage. Have had no problems whatsoever. I am not sure I understand the clinics concerns about the temperature. Sounds like you will be away for a while so you’d need at least a dozen injections? Just remember the liquid restrictions that many UK airports still have for hand luggage and the fact that all will have to be in a transparent bag- at least that’s what they wanted when I travelled a month ago.

But besides that, have a wonderful holiday and good luck with the TWW! x

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toIve_K

Thank you ☺️ medications are excluded from the hand luggage limit and have the letter to say I need to travel with them. She said the hold can get very very cold so you should alway put medication in the hand luggage but yes I will have at least 10 clexane pre-filled needles and 10 lubion vials so quite a lot to be in my hand luggage xx

I have asked security each time if I need to take them out of my bag and put them separately in the trays. Waved them at the security person, Clexane and pessaries and tablets. Each time the answer has been no. This was 5 or 6 times in total at Gatwick.

If you are worried about things being pulled out you can put them in a brown paper bag or different box as that will have zero impact on X-ray machine.

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toCXCYCZ

Thank you 🤗 that’s good to know!

I have been asked about the needles. Generally if you tell them it is medication, they will quickly just hand it back to you.

I wouldnt worry about the temperature in the hold, but what if your hold luggage went missing.

If you are worried about it, than I would try to stay back and catch the eye of the person putting things on trays and tell them I have needles with medication. then you have half a chance if they want a closer look, they will do it on your side. If you have a little person, you can always tell the family that it was his milk/ medication etc.

If you do not need to inject when on the plane, you could look at packing the needles in hold and taking the medication on board. But it may mean you have to get neeldes if your luggage goes missing. :D How easy that is, depends on your desitantion.

Twiglet2 profile image
Twiglet2 in reply toMegrumpy

I was going to split the meds across all 3 of our hold bags originally as the chances of 3 of them going missing are highly unlikely but then the nurse said about the temp in the hold yesterday! The clexane is premade made so needle connected but I dont need to take that until after I land and my progesterone I can probably take an out later that day when I land too! But I think I would feel better with them in the hold in case of delays so hopefully I can sneak through undetected by my family! There’s no way they won’t be looking at my little boy going through security though and there’s no way he will let me ‘hang back’ too much 🤣 so I will just need to hope they are all distracted putting their belts and stuff back on etc worried about themselves lol … you just don’t think about these things in the planning of the transfer stage timings do you! Xx

all the best for this transfer and hope the holiday provides a lovely distraction in the meantime. Keeping everything crossed for you xx
