Progesterone Levels - clinic refused to test

Hi everyone,

Not sure why I am even asking this as it’s too late now I but it’s been really bothering me.

I had my 4th FET a week ago. I begged to have my progesterone levels tested on transfer day and the clinic refused. I am NHS funded but I was willing to pay for the blood test. They said I am on industrial strength progesterone dosage and so it’s pointless having the level tested. I am on 25mg lubion in the morning and 400mg Utrogestan in the evening.

I can shake the feeling that my progesterone is low and that I have wasted yet another embryo that was never going to implant because progesterone was low.

How can they be so certain my levels are fine? I just feel so upset about it still. What should I do?

If you don’t bleed before OTD it seems unlikely your progesterone is low. Did you bleed earlier on previous rounds? Xx

On the first round I started spotting I think the day before test day. Since then no I haven’t. That’s quite reassuring. Thanks ☺️

That's good :) I have a terrible time with progesterone on my natural cycles and also bled earlier on my previous cycle. I am on exactly the same meds as you on this round and no bleeding (and BFP) so fingers crossed they do the trick. If you want to test yourself (I did when I started bleeding last time) Medichecks do it xx

The NHS is really bad for not checking your progesterone. It might be worth having a look around to see if you could have it checked privately. I had low progesterone and the NHS insisted there was no chance it could be low. Even on higher meds my progesterone was too low. I bled early on my NHS cycles but didnt on the higher dose and it was still way too low and like you had a gut feeling.xx

I thought about doing that when they said no and I really wish I had done it now to be honest. At least I would know 😢 so scared I’ve wasted another embryo

Dont beat yourself up, there's only so much you can do and them not testing isnt your fault. Only look forward, not back lovely!! Hugs.xx

Thank you so much. I got a BFP this morning at 9dp5dt 😱 so I’m going to ask for a progesterone blood test ASAP just to put my mind at rest. They did say if I achieved pregnancy I could have the levels tested, fingers crossed 🤞🏻 it’s all ok!

Just to put your mind at ease, I was on 25mg prolutex injection (another progesterone brand) and one 200mg Utrogestan in the evening, so even less than you and the progesterone levels were good. Yours will be fine I am sure as you are also talking the progesterone in a jab xxx

Thank you, yes they said as I’m injecting there shouldn’t be an issues but doesn’t stop me worrying 🤦🏼‍♀️ really reassuring to hear your levels were good x

I know the feeling, the worry never stops with this process… But as they said, if you are injecting your levels will be fine x

They should allow you to test, I pushed for this on an NHS cycle and apparently it’s allowed as it’s a test. Well done for getting Lubion on the NHS though! I was told I couldn’t have that (only Utrogestan and Cyclogest). If you’re on Lubion and Utrogestan (which I am this time now we’re paying!) you may we’ll be fine, but obviously only a test will show for certain. I am again pushing for a test this time, but i find that even when you’re private you have to push it. And got my clinic it takes 24 hours for a result (slow!), which means I insist on being tested the day before FET. Last time I insisted on being tested a week after the FET to see what had happened as a result of the extra progesterone, so it’s not too late potentially if you want reassurance x

Thank you for your reply.

It’s crazy isn’t it! Even with me wiling to pay for it they refused. It’s only a blood test. They said something about it not being accurate as levels fluctuate so much before pregnancy and I could get tested if I achieved pregnancy. I’ve just had a BFP so I’m going to be pushing for a test ASAP for some reassurance that’s for sure.

Yeah feel really lucky I got lubion, I know it’s expensive if you pay privately.

Might not be too late. On my first transfer I had progesterone checked 7 days after transfer and it was low, Dr told me to increase utrogestan from 5 to 8/day. I had a successful pregnancy. Try and get it checked privately for your own peace of mind. Good luck xxx

Don’t beat your self that much… I was on private when I had my ivf and was on 25mg Lubion (1x daily) + 400mg Progesterone (2x daily). The clinic never tested my progesterone during my ivf cyle, though my blood test for progesterone prior to treatment was less than ideal. I am now 29week pregnant.

Massive congrats Greyeverything ... For anyone else i always get my progesterone checked 7 days postovulation or a few days after transfer .. even though I was on high doses of progesterone support I still had low levels .. however this is also due to immune issues which attack the hormones.
