Progesterone problems of side effects

Unlockgoodhealth profile image

I'd love to hear from anyone who's found a progesterone that doesn't give the horrid side effects.

I first had on Utrogestan & it caused daily migraine literally from waking all day, stomach probs, and awful weird drowsiness and not feeling right & problems concentrating, pain at back of eyes, a bit of a list. To say the least I felt awful on it.

Changed now to Cyclogest and just on week 2 started getting horrid probs again.

Any advise or help wellcome.

Which progesterone did you have that had little or no side effects??

Utrogestan (the vaginal peasaries) and no side effects except a bit of sore boots! I didn't absorb them v well though (bloods test), and this time they've added in lentogest injection (apparently the best they said!!?) Its synthetic, intramuscular injection every 3 days, but I still have to take the pessaries as well! (No side effects just a bit of a sore bum after!!)

There are load software different types (from gels to tablets as well) but I wonder if it is the hormone you are reacting to? And they all give the same hormone! Injection may be the way to go? See what else your clinic offers?

Hope you get some relief and find one that works for you!

Thanks..your so lucky.Yes unfortunately it is the progesterone causing the probs.

My consutants great & has a 'amour' of options . I'm just working through them so far with not much luck.

Next on the list is Lutigest so I'll post if this is better!!

Finally someone that understands me! I had same bad side effects from ultrogestan. Stomach pain, diarreah, mood swings, headache and a constant feeling I was sick. I have been on progesterone for many months and everytime I have the same feeling. My doctor keeps saying it's normal.. but I haven read anyone until now that say the same..

Sorry to hear this & I hope your symptoms settle.I found I literally couldn't function was so ill & had to stop driving. My consultant said it was definately the Utrogestan.

Shes trying hard to find one that has less side effects but said some people have quite a bad time on progesterone.

Its a mine field for us who suffer the very bad side effects.

Has any one tried Lutigest ?? Read this can have less side effects.

I too have had awful side effects with Utrogestan to the point I want to stop taking it altogether. Very bad joint aches, sickness, dizziness and bloating that I really don't think are associated with being pregnant. Hope you find something to make things better for you x

Thank you... yes, sadly there are caused by progesterone not pregnacy.Did you symptoms lessen over time ?

Wishing you good luck & I hope your ok now.

Sadly my symptoms haven't changed. I do think it's so cruel as some of the symptoms could be pregnancy related but the drugs produce similar ones as its progesterone. I hadn't thought of changing it. I'm on 8 a day which to me seems excessive! I wish you luck too xx

Have you thought about taking it at night before bedtime? This way you can go to sleep and minimize the effects. Hope it gets better for you!

Yes ...with the night dose it did knock me out. I'd sleep for an average of 3hrs & awake with a migraine attack & eye pain so severe I couldn't sleep at all. Unfortunately these daily attacks lasted 8 to 12hrs every day. So along with the other side effect problems my consultant said to stop taking it.I had to have a 5day break for it to clear from my symptom, felt amazingly normal within 2 days of no Utrogestran.

But then my new regime on another progesterone started but also the side effects again...not good !!

Take care & thanks
