Lupus anticoagulant diagnosis- anyone else know more than me?

Hi,

I’ve found out today that Lupus anticoagulant has been detected in my blood tests. I spoke to a nurse from my clinic who didn’t know much about it but just said the consultant said she’d put me on blood thinners and steroids throughout my new cycle. Has anyone else experienced this or know anything more about it?

From my internet research it appears that the condition increases the chance of “inappropriate blood clotting” which can cause miscarriage. I haven’t had a BFP from our one fresh. 2 frozen cycles over the last year and this could maybe be a factor. However, I am scared that if I get a BFP I may miscarry. My chances are high being 40 anyway.

I’m trying to stay positive and think that this diagnosis means that I can be treated and it is no longer an unknown. Does anyone have any positive stories about this condition?

How many times have you been tested? You need at least two positive results in a row to have confirmation of lupus anticoagulant. The blood tests should be 12 weeks apart. Hopefully that’s what’s been done already.

I have lupus anticoagulant. I also have a beautiful 5 week old baby. I’ve had three previous miscarriages. 2 of those were after ivf treatment. Once lupus anticoagulant was discovered I was put on injections for thinning my blood and a daily aspirin (during treatment). I had a bfn despite the injections but sometimes bfns are just down to bad luck. I then got a bfp and the rest is history as they say.. check out some of my old posts..

Good luck xx

Thank you for replying and congratulations on your daughter.

I have only been tested once but spoke to the nurse not the consultant. I think the consultant is going to treat me as having it as we’re hoping to start our cycle in Oct but I guess she will get me retested as well (if not I’ll pop to my gps for the second test). She mentioned before the test that she wanted to put me on a low dose of blood thinners.

It’s really nice to hear your success story, thank you. Were you told of any impact the condition will have on any other part of your life or is this mainly related to pregnancy?

It means I’m slightly more at risk of developing blood clots, having a stroke.. but the risk is still small. My bloods will be periodically tested and my situation reviewed from time to time. I was terrified at the diagnosis but I don’t worry about it much now.

Speaking to your gp is a good place to start. It won’t hurt you or your chances to be on a low dose blood thinner, even a daily aspirin, but definitely try to get the blood work repeated.. my first results were negative! (Long story but I then had three positives). If you get your two positive results in a row there can be no doubt xx

Hi Redpixie. Good advice from “ Tugsgirl”. Even if a clotting problem is not identified, specialists often still advise blood thinners and low dose prednisolone to ensure a healthy blood flow to your womb lining and to boost your immune system. Hope all works out well for you next time. Diane
