Hi there, it's my first time on the forum. Just waiting for my first lap, not sure what to expect?? Any advice for post lap, and does anyone get bad back pain, very low down. Hurts to sit for long periods of time and then standing is painful, normally happens before my period. Any ideas if its related to endo???

Thanks

Hi, I've just joined today too :)

I sorry i can't comment on the standing/sitting pain as thats not something ive experienced. But i would say make sure you have someone to look after you post op if possible. I was told recovery would be 1-2 weeks and that i shouldnt experience any pain or too much disruption to my usual routine. I actually found i was exhausted and unable to stay awake for more than 4 hours at a time for about a week! i was also very stiff and had trouble walking or sitting up so spent much the two weeks lead on the sofa- when i phoned the hospital they said this was unusual so might not be the typical experience but thought i would share mine with you. I found the worst pain to be in my shoulders from the gas used in the op but ive since read that peppermint tea can help- if only I'd joined here earlier!

Good luck for your op, hope you get the results you are hoping for.

Hi. Not sure if you mean laparoscopy (keyhole) or laparotomy (open surgery). I've had both. I had keyhole first, was a bit sore for a couple of days then I felt fine! Shoulders ached most of all, was a bit bloated, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if I had to have another one.

As for open surgery, I needed two months before I was feeling up to working full time. It was a difficult time, and I needed someone to help me with bathing etc for the first week because the muscles were cut into to get to the endo on my bowel. However, I was told my operation turned into a bigger one than the doctors expected.

I've no idea about the standing sitting pain, although I feel like I can't walk slowly for a long time, like walking around the shops, I get a strange sensation in my hips radiating to my back, which can only be relieved by sitting. Sounds like the opposite to you!

Good luck in your op.

The thing to bear in mind is how much work is done, regardless of the size or number of incisions. If they find a lot of endo you may only have a few little incisions but your insides may be raw and recovery may be (unfortunately) painful and take anything from 4 to 6 weeks. On the other hand they could remove a cyst in open surgery and your recovery could be just a few relatively pain free weeks. They may also do a look and see lap and you will be back on your feet in a matter of days. If you have endo removed your first period post op can be quite painful.

For recovery I can recommend extra strong mints for nausea, peppermint tea for gas pain, and some comfy clothes. Plus a few DVDs and ready meals! I can also highly recommend stool softeners or a pack of plums!!!

Someone on here mentioned pain from sitting the other day, maybe Thursday?

Good luck honey x

I have awful lower left back pain, sometimes it goes on both sides but the left side is always there constantly, accompanied by lower left front pelvic pain and down my left leg, I cannot sit for too long, especially in upright chairs such as up to table, and standing is awful too, I find I'm better if I keep moving, but sometimes I'm just too tired to keep moving lol. I feel those pains everyday in varying degrees sometimes just dull and then it can be real sharp, when on period I get several hours per day of labour pains. I had my lap just over a month ago, was diagnosed with severe endo but they said too much to remove, and I agree 1-2 wks is not enough for a laparoscopy, I can honestly say this week is the best I've felt, I think I tried to push myself too much the week after, thinking I should be back to normal, but I think I prolonged my recovery. I was also sterilised and had an ablation, my endo pain has been much worse since the lap, my gp said its because they've messed about and prob caused more scar tissue and aggravated it, I was a bit gutted they didn't try to remove any endo, they are now trying to make me have a full hysterectomy but I'm undecided.

Good luck, have you got a date yet? Xx

Hi Gingerbabo, I get the back pain you describe. I'm going through it right now as I'm due on next week. Sitting for ages hurts and then when I get up to stand and walk around it relieves the pain a bit but then I have no energy to stand and walk! it also radiates down my legs, especially at bed time and then I get really bad figity legs because they hurt and then they hurt even more because I am moving them about too much! Painkillers don't touch the sides with the pain. The only relieve I get is from hot (and I mean proper lava!) baths and then a hot water bottle helps a little bit after the bath.

I thought I had a water infection yesterday because it stings when I wee and I had a lap a week and a half ago so I thought it was all linked. I went to the walk in centre last night and told the receptionist I had had surgery the week before........they left me waiting 2 and a half hours in a chair before they saw me last night. I was crying my eyes out with the back pain and the lap pain when they called me in. They checked my urine sample and it was fine and no sign of a water infection and then the nurse was really rude to me about my endo and it was very clear that she wasn't really sure what it was. She kept asking me to describe my back pain and I said its my normal back pain but because I have the stinging I just wanted to make sure I don't have a water infection. Then she said what pain killers do u take for ur back and I said I don't take pain killers because nothing works and so its silly pumping myself full of drugs if they don't work. Then she went all arsey and said well I can't help you then if you won't take painkillers!!!! and I just said to her I'm not here to discuss my endo with you I am just here to make sure I don't have a water infection. Lesson learnt last night that I will only go to my gp and my consultant abt my endo issues as a lot of health care practitioners don't have a clue!

Hi

My first time on the forum too. Last February I had a large cyst removed from my left fallopian tube by way of laparotomy (open surgery). I also had two incisions where they triedto do key hole by investigationg with small cameras, but the cyst was too large. Recovery was smooth and fast. I was told to have 6 weeks off work but I went back after 2 weeks as I felt well enough and was bored. I think it is different for everyone.

With regards to the back pain, I have been experiencing this (one of the reasons I went back to my GP who then diagnosed with endometriosis). It does not coincide with my menstrual cycle, it is constant. However, I find that if I have been experiencing constipation (due to an enlarged left ovary) the pain worsens.

My thought, and my GP's opinion, is that the ovary is causing the constipation and thus causing some of the pain and discomfort.

I work in a school and I am stood up a lot and I find that when both standing and sitting I experience pain, but standing is worse. Make sure you rest as much as you can and take pain relief. Hopefully you will feel much better after your lap x

Thank u everyone for your responses. Just to know I'm not on my own is a great help. Still haven't had a date yet for my lap, and gonna go back to GP this week to check on lower back pain, I do a lot of lifting at work and its effecting my job. I've also had a massive decline in my sex drive, it's virtually gone completely. My partner is doing his best to understand but it's becoming an issue. How's everyone else coping? The thought of sex makes me panic, I know it gonna hurt and I'm not gonna enjoy it :-(
