The Mirena coil definitely helps. It is tipped with progesterone (the same hormone as the pill and the mini-pill), but a much lower dosage delivered more directly. You can keep it in for up to 5 years. If your endo is bad, it usually takes about 6 months to go back to "normal" - but "normal" is often better than we've had in years! And each month things improve.

Some people find that the Mirena gets less effective as time goes by and some people find that it has hormonal side-effects that are very difficult. If you have bad PMT and struggle with the pill, you *might* find the Mirena has difficult side-effects after a while, but it's still a lower dosage than the pill so worth a go.

Hey,

I got the merina in 2009 and it definitely helped. I spent Jan to Aug 2009 in so much pain I was missing work loads and never going out with my friends. Then, I got a laparoscopy in August 2009 and they fitted a merina coil which relieved my symptoms hugely.

I was initially concerned about the hormonal side-effects as I have had problems before with the contraceptive injection (it made me an emotional wreck / psycho bitch - depends who you ask!) and the pill (I thought it made me have headaches and put on weight) but the Merina has not given me any of those side effects.

It never stopped me from bleeding, but it made the bleeding a lot lighter and it stopped me from having the 10 days of suffering that I used to have.

Unfortunately, over the last 5 months or so, I have felt the pain getting a bit worse again and I'm now getting Zoladex injections, but I still highly recommend getting the merina coil and seeing if it works for you before the doctors try zoladex. Although it has stopped being as effective for me, it was 100% worth getting for the couple of years that it helped.

I hope this helps, if you've got any more questions, I'm happy to help as much as I can.

Xxx

Hi, I had the mirena fitted after my second endo surgery in 2008. I had a lot of cramping for about 6 months but since then I feel like I've got my life back. I still get ovulation and period pain but it resolves with ibuprofen. Before I had it I was taking codene and ibuprofen and still in agony. I don't think I have any side effects. I would recommend you get one, if u do get side effects they can easily take it out, but remember it could take months to settle. I wouldn't be without it now as its changed my life significantly.

It's helped me to some degree.

I had it inserted just over a year ago. I've not actually had a proper period in over 5 years as I've been on one type of treatment or another since I was diagnosed. It has it's pros and cons.

It's taken a while for my body to settle with it but I guess some people are more sensitive than others.

The Pill absolutely ruined my life as it made my migraines worse, so if you're a sufferer I recommend the coil as they've more or less disappeared now, as have my periods.

But I still have some pain and bad PMT. The pain I can deal with but the PMT has me holed up not wanting to talk to anyone till it's over, though saying that I've barely had any in the past few months so hopefully that's disappeared :D

Also my weight is a LOT easier to maintain. I've even given up the gym and am able to lose a few pounds by calorie counting but couldn't do that whilst on other treatments.

Personally, I recommend it. And I was lucky enough to be able to have it inserted under general because I've got a fixed uterus so didn't even have to go through that ordeal.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide xx

I had the coil fitted nearly a year ago and I would say that it hasn't left me pain free but it reduced the pain I am in from about 3 weeks of every cycle to about a week. So all in all I would say it was worth it. It never stopped my periods but made the bleeding much lighter. The timeI am in most pain is during ovulation though and it didn't really help with that.

Good luck x

I had an unmitigated disaster of a time with the mirena. I have grade 3 endo I had a d+c and had it fitted it was ok for a week and I then had the worst pain imaginable. I was signed off work for 10 weeks because to kill the pain I was knocked out on morphine. I then begged to have it removed and they did so and within 2 hours the pain stopped. I believe my severe pain was my body rejecting it as a foreign body. Everyones experiences with it are different I think. If you dont get on with it, it can be removed

Yes it defiantly helped my Endo i had it inserted after my last lap and it stopped my periods completely, but mine seems to have stopped working after having it for 3 years and the pain has came back worse than ever in the past 8 months, still no periods though,so I'm back at gyny this Monday and really considering a full hysterectomy as luckily i have had my children,so sick of running back and forth to doctors that are clueless and constantly taking pain killers!sorry about the rant :( I would say yes its worth a go even if you get a few years relief.:)

I had a mixed time on mirena. It really reduced the intensity and frequency of the pain. But I bled a little everyday. I put on weight faster. And my sex drive just disappeared. Good luck whatever you decide xx
