recovery and fitness hysteroscopy and laparoscopy

Hi 👋 I am booked in for hysteroscopy (fibroids) laparoscopy (cyst and endo diagnosis hunting expedition) and Mirena insert in just over a weeks time. Had my pre op etc. neither gynae nor the nurses in pre op could tell me (other than 2 weeks sign off from work) what the recommendations are for fitness etc.

I’m 51 and do home resistance and weight training 3-4 times a week. Upper body lower body core etc. Goblet squat 20kg bicep curl 7.5 kg etc.

I do yoga in between, mostly restorative poses to make space in abdomen (even if it’s in my hea,d it does me good).

Anyone know how long I should skip sessions, whether to keep going but drop to body weight only and build back up? I find focusing on strength helps me feel stronger in my limbs when the middle of me is such a mess. It doesn’t seem to make pain any worse it’s the same if I do work out or don’t.

I always stop if an ovary starts pinging.

Any advice appreciated, I’ve followed someone on Instagram but they are very diet oriented and don’t seem to have found what I’m looking for.

hiya! Excited for you that you’re all booked in for surgery. I think each surgery is very dependent on the person in terms of severity and removal of the endo and that’s why doctors don’t like to give a guideline on recovery. I’m 3 months post lap and I found I could do yoga after 2 months but very restorative classes, like flows. Anything cardio or intense movement flares up my stomach and pains still, swimming is okay because it doesn’t move my stomach too much. For weights etc I wod say after 6 weeks - 2 months you might be okay to do any thing that doesn’t involve moving your stomach too much, but everyone is different and even though it’s annoying to hear you just have to test things and see how you go and listen to your body. You’ll know when it’s right to start again and your body will tell you if you’ve gone too far afterwards. Hope that helps in some way!

hey! I think it’s completely variable from person to person. Will most likely depend on if/what they find and how much they remove, making it very hard to say how long recovery will be. I know with my surgery last year I convinced myself they probably wouldn’t find anything and told work I would likely be back in a week… ended up needing to stay in hospital over night and was given a 4 week sick note and told no weight training/ lifting for at least 6 weeks. Even at the 6 week mark I was only gradually building my weights etc back up as was easily fatigued and getting some niggles. Best of luck! X

Oh cripes so the 2 weeks of cover I’ve planned for my classes might not be enough. thanks for this. Food for thought. Much appreciated.
