Merina coil post op

hey ! I had the merina coil put in during my Endo laparoscopy 6 weeks ago.

I'm about to start my second period, like clockwork, since the op. The pain is so bad ! I need a little hope and reassurance that this will slowly stop ? I thought the hormonal coil was meant to stop the pain, but it’s just like the pain I had before all my endo was removed.

Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you in advance xx

Hi there. The Mirena can stop / reduce pain but it’s not guaranteed. It can also take a good few months for everything to settle once it’s in. You should find over time your periods stop, or at least that is the case for most people. If the pain is more associated with periods than endo, it’s more likely to help. I personally get constant pain and have been using Mirenas for over 15 years. For me, having one is invaluable as my periods were super heavy and super long so it has at least taken all of that away, although dealing with the endo / adeno related pain I have is a significant ongoing challenge.

My recommendation would be to give your Mirena time and see what it does for you over the next 3-6 months, going back to ask for help if it doesn’t help. I’d also recommend going sooner if you’re worried. I know exactly how it feels to come away from surgery with a Mirena believing that everything now has a fix then realising it’s sadly more complicated than that. Good luck with your journey. X

Hi, I had the coil put in while under for laparoscopy. It took a good 7-8 months for me to be pain free the first 3 months were not the best. However I was on pain medication from before my surgery and that made the transition alot easier. It was given me by the GP. Might be worth asking for some for a bit while your body settles into a new rhythm.

You might find the coil doesn't work for you but the doctors tend to ask you to give it a really good go for about a year

Hope you can get some help with it and feel better soon

Hi. I've had similar problems to you - had Mirena put in just over 4 months ago after they spotted endo on my MRI. The first 3 months were really awful - constant bleeding and pain that was just as bad as pre-coil. The last month has been a lot better, still getting low level almost constant pain but gone down to bits of spotting every now and then. It's definitely had an impact on my mood and sex drive so I'm not sure whether to keep persevering, but I think in terms of pain and bleeding it has improved things, just takes a lot of time. Sorry it's been rubbish, I totally feel you! Hope it improves soon x
