Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - how to recover?

Recovering from or living with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease? Please tell me your story. Maybe caused by copper IUD??

I am 45 years old and was very active and busy up until mid April this year. Regular 5-8 km running and upwards of 10,000 steps per day. No health issues. Had copper coil fitted in 2013.

Mid April woke up with awful stomach pains… eventually diagnosed with PID and hospitalised. Had to have laparoscopy to wash out 8cm of infected Fallopian tubes, pelvic abscess, etc.

The bio labs showed the coil was growing bacteria - likely the cause of the problems but that could have been going on for years??? Hospital removed the coil.

Discharged but recovery not progressing, readmitted for more IV antibiotics after an internal scan showed numerous signs of problem areas - another ovarian cyst and a lot of inflammation/ distorted Fallopian tubes etc.

It’s 6 weeks since I became ill . I still feel very uncomfortable and suspect the infection is still present. My consultant indicated that these things are very difficult to shift and sometimes cannot be eradicated.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Did you find a solution? Please help. I’m very uncomfortable walking any distance and feels weird going up stairs. Walking on uneven ground is really uncomfortable.

It’s just awful. So little information about it. Thanks for sharing your experience- sorry to hear you are still suffering. Can they not remove your Fallopian tubes etc or is that not possible?

Hi i’ve had 2 surgeries up to now and i’m awaiting a third surgery in my first they removed my womb in my second they removed my blocked tubes and ovaries but part of my ovary was apparently left inside my pelvis accidentally

Hi, I too had a similar experience. This time last year I was on a mission to be fab, fit and fifty by 2022! In Dec I saw my gp due to erratic periods and pain, they referred me to the hospital via the two week wait.

Had a ultra sound and then at my hospital Appt had a biopsy taken from my womb, told I had a cyst. From this point I felt awful, I had a bad infection bordering Sepsis, 3 lots of anti biotics, hospital visits, 4 weeks off work, another ultra sound which showed major changes to the cyst. I was then sent for an MRI which showed abscesses in my Fallopian tubes, fibroids and endometriosis and I would need surgery but through the normal nhs process.

Haven’t been right since!

Had gynae Appt last week and told I will need to have a full hysterectomy but with the added complications of an issue with my bowel. Now the 3-6 month wait.

So much for fit and fifty! X

This sounds like a terrible ordeal for you. Do you know the cause of the problems? I’m discovering so many problems caused by IUDs…What symptoms are you having? Have you found anything to alleviate them?

in reply to Duckface45

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying…..life gets in the way 😂.Have no idea what has caused it. I have been asked and tested for STD’s which is an ordeal as I have been married for 29 years!

I still believe the infection from the biopsy has caused it but the experts say no.

I take Naproxin when needed and am watching what I eat especially wheat and dairy (not completely cut it out). Plus exercising every day is helping.

Hope you are not suffering too much xx

With the best will in the world, it is in no way helpful to have people casting aspersions about promiscuity when it’s a known medical fact that PID is also caused by other conditions such as BV and IUD (in my case). Continually making sanctimonious posts about STDs does nothing to help women like me who have been in a monogamous relationship for 28 years!

You might say it’s completely preventable, in my case it would only have been preventable if I’d know the extent of widespread problems the copper coil can cause.

So basically you didn't and do not have any vaginal symptoms like burning or itching? Do you know what kind of bacteria did they get from the IUD breeding test?
