Hysterectomy during covid times

Hello, I've just received the date for my hysterectomy - Jan. In the letter it states that I should get a relative to pick me up at 7.15am the next morning which will be less than 24 hours after the surgery. This seems very quick! I've asked for clarification from the hospital on this but was wondering if anyone has recently had a hysterectomy (NHS) and if this is normal. I understand that covid has changed things and am very grateful to have an actual date but am worried about being sent home too quickly. Any advice is appreciated. 🙏🏻

I'm having my hysterectomy tomorrow, but scheduled to come home the following day as well. I have read a few posts recently on another platform I'm on that some people who have the first surgery of the day have been home late the same evening - obvs only where it has been done by laparoscopic surgery rather than abdominal.

At my pre-op I was told, if all goes to plan and it stays laparoscopic, they'll look for you to eat something, a successful wee or 2 agree catheter removal, get up you up and about walking and, once that's been done, they're happy to discharge.

Of course, that's all dependant on things going to plan. But 24 hours in hospital isn't unusual ❤️

Thank you so much for your reply. It all becomes suddenly real when you get the letter doesn't it! Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow. I hope it all goes well.

I had my full hysterectomy laparoscopically in September. I went in at 7am and came out 7pm the next evening.I imagine they just want you to have your transport in place for coming home, as they have to get your catheter removed, and typically will want you to wee three times before you go home. This is not something that can be rushed!

If you are worried, or would like confirmation, I would advise phoning the ward or admissions lounge and having a conversation about it.

Best of luck xxx

Thank you for taking the time to reply. My consultants secretary did say that it’s standard but if there were any issues they would not send me home that quickly which was a relief! How are you now following your op?

Hi, I’m 8 weeks post op, and ended up having to keep in touch via phone with updates as to when I’d be released, so I could be picked up! Ended up about 4pm the following day, due to my blood pressure being high! They do want you home quickly if all goes to plan, and believe me, it’s nice to get home!!! Good luck. X
