Mirena could and mood swings

Hi,

I have a laparoscopy and Mirena cool fitted in early September. In the last month I have noticed my mood has changed. I am more anxious, nervous, paranoid, short and snappy and wondered whether anyone else has felt similar?

May just be me and the covid blues ( which I don’t think helps).

I also feel I’ve gained weight and my skin isn’t the best?!

Thanks in advance x

Hello I am undiagnosed... Not to stress you but I have had the coil since I was 17 due to severe periods I am 22 now... When I first got my coil I still had heavy periods and severe cramps... Last year my coil was out of place and I needed it replaced... I sadly developed severe hormonal acne along my cheeks and jawline and I went from a size 8 to 18 since having it fitted when I was 17 (I was also in alot of pain and struggled moving daily because it majorly masked my pain but iv suspected developed other physical issues because of the masking) the coil is amazing in some ways for me personally and not in others I'm getting it removed soon I think... I'd suggest as it is still early on for you and it takes time to settle maybe give it a while and see how you are, some people are fine and have no side effects once it settles and some like myself it just doesn't work.. And for me it's a case of working out is it worth it... For me it's not (as my coil isn't happy and likes to move and just isn't working) but honestly I think it's definitely worth seeing how you go with it, I hope it all settles down for you xx

Hello,

I experienced the same mood symptoms you are describing to begin with, and I got really worried about this. I saw lots of people saying that they rode it out for a while and it eventually calmed down, so I decided I would wait a while and see if things got better. I have now had mine in for a year and a half and after the first maybe 3-4 months, my mood swings definitely calmed down. I still experience some mood swings but I remind myself that this would probably happen to some extent regardless of having the coil.

The Mirena coil has also been the best thing I’ve had for dealing with my symptoms so for me, it was definitely worth the wait.

I also had some counselling to help deal with the anxiety and low mood that I could feel, and this was really helpful.

P.s I did also find when I researched and looked around online that there were a lot more people reporting horror stories about the coil than positive stories. Someone reminded me that this is natural as people are more likely to share their negative experiences than their positive ones, so try not to worry if all you see are negative experiences!

Hi I have had the coil for nearly two years the moods swings do calm down. When I had it first fitted I was so emotional and down but it got better as time went on I think your body adapts to it over time. Also on the pain front it really helped for just over a year , I still have a light period but the pain is back to the severity it was pre coil . The weight gain has been a huge problem for me I think that has really impacted my confidence . Hope it settles soon

Thank you all so much.I literally thought i was going mad or had something wrong with me as I am teary one minute and happy the next.

Struggled coming back to work and dealing with everyone and feel really alone - I know its how I feel and not anyone else.

I have bleed slightly when I would usually have a period and am 99% pain free - so not all bad! In regards to weight I don't feel I have put much on than I usually would in the winter lol

I will give it a few more months to see how I get on.

Thanks so much, its nice to speak to others in the same boat- sometimes I feel that other are just like ' oh here we go again, another excuse'.

Thank you

Hi Ellen, I had the mirena coil fitted and if really effected my moods, I was so grumpy and irritable and then felt guilty about feeling so grumpy.. it was awful. I suffered with it for 3 months and then decided to have it removed, my mood went back to normal within a week or two. Looking back I think I should have tried it for another couple of months, at the time though I felt so low, I just wanted it out. Sorry you're having these problems with it too.. :(

Not what you're looking for?
