Mirena coil - weight gain and mood swings

Hi everyone,

Anyone have the mirena coil for Endometriosis and noticed any side effects? I have put on like 12kg in a year - this is the fastest I have put on weight, eating about the same as I usually do. And my moods are all over the place? I am so up and down. Doctors have said it is not a known side effect of the Mirena but this is just not normal?

If you don't have the mirena, what do you use to treat your endometriosis?

Super curious, I don't know anyone really who has the same thing

Hiya Dreamer

I had the coil fitted about 2 weeks ago and I really noticed the affect on my mental health, pretty much straight away. I take Sertraline for my mental health anyway so I did question whether it was going to be suitable for me but after a discussion with my GP, I was advised to stick with it for at least 3 months, if I can.

I see you have had it for a year? Perhaps you need to speak to Endo UK or give a specialist a call? Only you know if the mood swings are manageable- everyone is different. Just because someone says its not a common side affect, doesnt mean it isnt happening to you. 100% advocate for yourself and keep insisting you need more advice. It can be really hard when you feel like nobody is listening but I get it. I promise I do. As far as weight gain, I cant comment on that because I havent noticed that yet but its hormones so... I would say its likely linked... I'm not a health professional though. Perhaps the coil just isnt for you? Perhaps take some time to discuss the affect its had on your mental health, with a qualified person? It's such a fine balancing act, trying to treat Endo. Each day is different which is very difficult to cope with.

Sorry it's been a rough year for you. Really hope you get some answers soon xxx

Hi Claire,

Apologies for the late reply and thank you for commenting! I don't really want to take anything to do with hormones for this and that is what they suggest. It is really hard when no one is really listening. I have now been diagnosed with PCOS so I don't know it could be that too. So many ups and downs!

Best wishes,

Elizabeth

Hey. You aren't imagining it. It's the coil!!!! It's so so triggering and personally don't think they should be pushing it to every endo sufferer because the benefits do not outweigh the cons with this contraption. Honest opinion obviously but yeah. 2 surgically removed. Various friends had same. Never heard a good experience x

Thank you for sharing! I don't really know anyone on it and they say it is just me. im thinking whether just to remove and not do any hormone treatments

Hi there! I was just coming on to make a post. I have had my coil for almost 2 years now. Right after insertion I had some random panic attacks but nothing major. After a year I started having more frequent panic attacks and then had the biggest one that I’ve ever had September of 21. After that the anxiety became all encompassing. I talked with my doctor about the coil and she said that it could increase anxiety, but it was rare and wrote a script for Celexa. I felt defeated, but have continued on. While the anxiety has gotten better I still have awful moments. Each time it makes me wonder if the coil isn’t behind it. I haven’t ever had anxiety at these levels. The coil has however helped the pain and my overall gut health tremendously, so I don’t know what to do. I also fear removal because of the pain returning and what effect that will have on my mental health.

It is so tricky!! I am sorry you are going through that. I am so tired of dealing with this. I am just leaving it for the meantime

Hope you are feeling better

Best wishes,

Elizabeth
