Canadian Student - NHS waiting time for diagnostic lap for endometriosis

Hey everyone,

I'm currently studying my masters over in the UK. I have seen a specialist in East London and got my pre admissions quite quickly, I think within a month. I was told by the nurse to chase up a date and was just told they think I wouldn't get a date before the pre admissions expires. I am wondering how long anyone waited for specialists in London or anywhere else in the UK for a diagnostic lap? I am not sure how the system works here and seem to always get conflicting answers. Has anyone gone private?

Thanks lovelies!

Hi, it was 9 months between my pre admissions check and my surgery date. I was never told about my pre admissions check expiring though so this may vary between areas.

So strange! I was told it expired after 3 months and I would have to re do it. I'll have to ring the secretary and ask for more details. Thank you!

Tbh I have no clue how anything works I’d been told it was around a year to wait on NHS but in my appointment I was given a date then and there for the next month which is now 2 weeks away and I have no clue why I was different to anyone else but I have been told that it’s around 4 months before a pre op ‘expires’ xx

Wow lucky you! Good luck with the surgery and recovery! I can't seem to figure out how it all works. Thank you!

Hello

So the preop should last for 3 months after that if you surgery date is after that you'd need another one.

As to how long you'll be waiting this depends on a few things. 1st if the waitlist of the hospital /surgeon you have. And if you are having a multidisciplinary team (this usually extends the waiting time quite a bit to be able to get every free on one date).

One way to see the average wait for the hospital you are under is by using this website

nhs.uk/service-search/Gynae...

It shows you the waiting times from point of referral to treatment, a diagnostic lap would be considered treatment as if endo is found they can remove what they see. This is an average so obviously some are seen quicker and some it takes longer. But it'll give you a good idea. Point of referral is the date in which the hospital received the request for you to be referred or the date you booked your appointment to first see the gynecologists (not the date you actually saw the gynecologist).

I hope this helps clarify they nhs system and wait times. It does vary alot from hospital to hospital and different areas are long others are short.

Thank you so much, so helpful! Definately gives me a clearer idea of how it works. I'm going to check out the link and see how long the wait might be. Just been hard to get an answer out of anyone at the hospital!
