Anyone on levothyroxine?? Advice x

Evening ladies. Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend.

I have been on thyroxine for 5 weeks tomorrow and everything has been fine, I’ve been taking them along with iron tablets 2x a day. I seem to feel better in myself.

However this should be my first period since taking the medication, I am now 2 days late and I’m worrying as I am normally regular, I have a period every month without doubt. Ive had a headache for the past few days, and period like cramps but nothing... I’ve taken a test which come back negative. Is this normal has anyone else taking this medication experienced anything similar?

Thank you all xx

Hi hope you’re ok

I am on thyroxine been on it 15!years I take 250 per day it works well

I remember stopping it for about 3 months and went the GP over tiredness and he said It was a wonder I could still walk And talk as I was so low by not taking it

Also with the iron it can make periods and other hormone changes just why it gets in your system

Believe me you will see the change soon!

A little suggestion is always take in the morning before breakfast and the iron

Take 1 in morn 1 at night

You can become a little constipated but it should ease

Hope you work it all out

Take care xx

Thank you for replying to me, I’m so worried that probably doesn’t help at all! I’m such a worrier over everything.

I’ve only just recently started my iron tablets, I must admit I haven’t been taking them at all, also I was told take the thyroxine in the morning and I couldn’t take my iron for 4 hours is that correct?

Xx

Hiya

firstly relax if you can as if you’re worrying then you will be more stressed ,

I’m not a docter but I think 1 iron tablet a day is better tbh so the thyroxine in the morning and the iron Like lunch time maybe

Tbh I take all mine at the same time always have first thing in the morning with cold milk or water,

It’s just the way I do it but you can do it any time you feel like it but better am than pm ! If that makes sense

Yes relaxing is better as then blood pressure and panicking will ease and you will start to get in a more organised and relaxed state and it will get easier

Is it under active thyroid you have ?

Hi Again,

Sorry to bother you! Been looking online (sometimes the worst thing to do) and made myself so scared, I read a young girl saying that taking thyroxine and make you go into premenopause. Is that something you’ve heard of as u have been on the tablet for a while? Xx

Hi I have been on levothyroxine for 18 years now and it can take a few weeks for it to initially settle but once it does it shouldn’t effect your periods. I was advised to take it without food in the morning but I’ve heard others being told to take it at night before bedtime?

I hope you feel much better soon.

Thank you.

That’s a long time, do you find it helps you? And do you get any side effects etc?

Yes I’ve been taking mine in the morning with water and leaving it between 30-60 minutes before breakfast.

Thank you for your advice I appreciate it xx

Hi My thyroid became underactive after having my daughter so was prescribed the medication. The medication helped me to have more energy and feel “normal”

Unfortunately I have stage 4 Endometriosis so it’s hard to comment if the medication has helped anything else.

Stress can effect our periods and let’s face it doctors / hospital appts new medication can take its toll.

I hope you feel better soon xx

Hi I thought I had replied but I had not pressed reply 😆 blame my age ha ha

Obviously we are all unique but I have never heard that before?

Once you start taking levothyroxine your gp should run blood tests each year to check on your thyroid levels.

If you are concerned you could ask for reassurance?

Please never apologise you are never bothering me and if I can answer any questions I always will try.

I do think lots of people wrote about the negative impact of medication and not always the positives.

One thing I will mention now you are taking Levothyroxine you can apply for a medical exception card so all of your prescriptions are free of charge. Every little helps as you may be on the medication for life.

Take care.

I've been taking it for 10 years (since I was 13). Works fine for me but I've basically taken it all my life so I don't know. Your hormones probably need to settle to a good thyroid hormonal balance.

I'm also anemic. Levothyroxine should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach while it's preferable to take iron tablets during dinner or while eating something protein-based and preferably with something that contains vitamin C (such as a kiwi, some freshly-squeezed orange juice or parsley) and folic acid (e.g. salad).

Thank you for replying.

I was thinking that it may take some time as my body isn’t use to having the thyroxine. I’m just a worrier lol

Thank you for the advice xx

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, taking thyroxine is of utmost importance. Hypothyroidism can lead to more significant hormonal and therefore gynecological issues, can cause estrogen dominance, heavy bleeding and it can lead to difficulty getting pregnant, increases chances of miscarriage and poor fetal development as well as irregular periods.

If she went into pre-menopause it's because either she was genetically susceptible to it or because of other factors. Yes, if you take the WRONG quantity of levothyroxine that can mess up your hormones too and hyperthyroidism can cause insomnia and anovulation, thus confusing it with pre-menopause.

I suffer from Hashimoto's and get blood tests every 3 months to make sure the amount I'm taking is right for me. Hormonal balance is so hard to achieve and maintain that you need to make sure you're taking the right dosage, which can take months of trial and error and blood tests + you will need to continue taking blood test for as long as necessary (for a lifetime if you have a chronic condition like me).

If you have a good endocrinologist, you'll get to the right level within 2-3 months.
