I have had the coil fitted but ever since (2 weeks ago) I’ve had horrific period pains - didn’t have them before and were so bad yesterday I spent the day in bed - is this usual ?

How awful, I’m so sorry you are experiencing pain, have you mentioned this to your doctor to see if any adjustments can been made?

I have had very mixed reviews from close friends who have had the mirena coil; I know everyone’s experience is different but some have said it take 6 months to a year to settle. I’ve also had a few friends that just didn’t get on with it and the negative outweighed any positives by a tremendous amount which resulted in removal.

My doctors were adamant they would be fitting one in me during surgery but I refused and even made sure it was written in my agreement. Purely on the grounds I seem to react quite badly to various contraceptive implants and injections.

Seek medical advice and see if they can find a way forward. It may be that you need to wait a little longer for your body to become accustomed to it.

How long had it been since it was fitted?

I don’t have any experience with this but have recently be recommended by my gynaecologist to have one fitted for symptom relief.

I would be going back to my gp as simplydeedee has advised. I know from a few friends experiences that the coil can be not quite placed correctly and cause issues.

I hope you find some relief soon, let us know how you get on xx

I am sorry you are having such issues Boo. Although it is a successful treatment for some, when I was offered the coil I turned it down because my mother had it and had issues with it - she started bleeding worse and heavier, with pain, and they had to remove it shortly after insertion. I recommend closely monitoring your symptoms and flow and discussing it with your doctor. You may just be having an initial bumpy start that will go away, but if you are not happy with how it is affecting you, then do not hesitate to ask to have it removed, as there are alternative treatment options that can be explored instead.
