Coil fitting experiences

I have just had a coil fitted this morning and the pain is horrendous, it was much worse then I thought it would be. Does anyone have any tips on what to do to ease the pain and how long it takes for the pain to ease off?

Hi Luci20! I was in really bad pain for about 24 hours and then period-like cramps for a few days. I took co-codamol, used a hot water bottle, and just rested. I found I couldn't really stand up or walk the afternoon I got the coil in but it did get better by that evening!

Hope you recover quickly!

Thanks for your reply. The pain is the worst I have ever been in. I can’t believe strong pain relief isn’t even offered during the insertion and afterwards. The doctor said mine was a difficult insertion as my uterus was trying to reject it then. Don’t think the paracetamol and ibuprofen taken before helped at all. I can hardly walk either and I read online before having the coil fitted that women are fine to go to work straight after insertion and that the insertion is just uncomfortable. Maybe for some women it is but for me it has been the most excruciating pain.

I know some people find it fine and others who find it horrendous (even those without endometriosis). Do you have someone that can go to a pharmacy for you? At the very least, some cocodamol should help. Ibuprofen and paracetemol didn't do anything for me either.

Try some deep breathing! I wish I could help more but I know it can be really awful! I think if it doesn't ease at all with a stronger painkiller, then I would be calling 111 or your doctor to see if they can do something to help!

I had weird painful cramping after insertion. At one point I was actually worried about perforation. I ended up laying around with an ice pack on my belly. By the next day it was much better. I hope you get some relief soon!

Thanks for your reply. I’m worried too that’s something has gone wrong as I never expected it to be this painful. Hopefully the pain will ease off soon x

I have honestly been through this too, my first one was just horrid! I actually reacted to it and was sick everywhere and passed out ended up being there for most of the day as they wouldn’t let me go until I settles down! Felt like I was walking like I was a penguin I’m sure! It eased after a couple days or pain and cramps! Hope it works out for you having the coil! X

I have had the coil removed already! Only lasted 4 days with it and the pain seemed to get worse not better. My body was defiantly just trying to reject it and I couldn’t cope with the pain any longer.
