Hi everyone, can you please tell me your experience with the Mirena Coil?
I haven't had great luck with side effects both from procedures and medications, so I'm scared to try something that I can't easily stop overnight!
Thanks x

I’ve actually gotten on well with my coil. It’s pretty much stopped my bleeding I only get occasional spotting.
However I do still suffer with severe ovulation pain and random bouts of pelvic pain. But so glad I don’t get periods anymore. As they were debilitating.
I was already on progesterone based contraception before so I think my body was quite used to it already so only took a few weeks to settle.
I only managed to keep mine in for 14 weeks. I could feel the coil all the time especially when I was sat down. It made me bleed every day and I was getting really bad cramps from it. It made me feel worse. Everyone is different though. My approach was try it and if it isn’t right, get it taken out.
Hi , really sorry I can offer any positive opinions on the coil. I had mine inserted in January . The joy of it was the pain i experienced daily was gone , however that in the last month has begun to return and the negatives by far way out that single positive . I’ve still had periods , migraines are more intense and frequent, I’m constantly extremely fatigued and suffered from mentally (constantly depressed and sad and very emotional) . I just had my hormone bloods checked and my body is sturugging with the amounts of progesterone it releases , so I’m now being put on HRT and Zoladex as well as the coil. From my understanding the coil is the most common treatment for Endo but it’s not always best. I would suggest if you go ahead with it keep a daily diary of your diet symptoms and mood. Good luck x
Hi, had my mirena coil fitted during surgery Nov 2020. Took a good 8-9 months for bleeding to fully stop. Since, only get the occasional spotting. Unfortunately, doesn’t help with pain, but so thankful to have stopped bleeding like I was. Main reason I agreed to having it though was to reduce the build up of endo, which I’m hoping has been successful. Everyone is different, & respond in different ways. I believe the only way is to try it out for ourselves & hope for the best. Good luck & Take care xx
Thanks for sharing!! Can I ask, did you bleed for 8 months straight or was it that you had 8 periods and then it stopped?
I had my Mirena coil fitted in March 2023. I was told "it won't be a miracle cure", but honestly, it felt like just that. My pain was relieved only a few days after the coil was fitted, and I now only experience any cramping or pain around ovulation. Before the coil, my pain was constant and everyday as it is for so many of us. It was a debilitating pain and I had to stop working it was so bad. So to only have a few days of, in comparison, tolerable pain, was life changing.
My periods got lighter and shorter each month after the coil, and since November last year I haven't bled at all. It's been my first time using a hormonal contraception so I have noticed a change in my mood, I do get short and snappy more often now. But for me personally, none of the side effects outweigh the benefits of the coil. Its been life changing for me and I only wish I had known about it years ago and had it fitted sooner!
Everyone is different, I hope you're able to find plenty of helpful information. Good luck with everything! X
Hi!
I’ve just had my mirena coil replaced after having my first one put in in Nov 2019. The worst part for me was definitely having the coil put in itself, although I will say I think that was more the speculum’s fault.
At no point has my bleeding stopped like it has for others, my periods went from being heavy for 7 days to being light for 10/11 days, although it took a year or so to get to that stage. I still get a small amount of cramping, but we’re talking dramatically reduced from what it was, it’s typically more like a pressure pain than a stabby pain. It did seem to stop working as well after 3 years, which is why I have finally had mine replaced last week. I’ve only had mild discomfort with the exchange so fingers crossed it works as well as the last.
It isn’t for everyone as others have said, but for me it’s the best hormonal treatment because it’s localised to the uterus so doesn’t interfere with anything else. It might be worth a try and there’s no harm in having it removed if it doesn’t work for you.
