Cystoscopy and laparoscopy the following day?!

emmaquinny profile image
25 Replies

So, it seems I finally have a date for my lap, and then I got a date through the post for a cystoscopy the day before. The cystoscopy is emergency following bleeding from the bladder. I saw my gp today and she said she couldn’t see it would be a problem them being close together. I really wish they could be the same time 😭 worried I’m going to end up in pain peeing and then going for the lap. Do you have a catheter in for the lap too? I’m having a hysteroscopy at the same time as my lap. Any advice gratefully received as ever!

Hi Emmaquinny, I had a cystoscope earlier this summer, you are given a local anaesthetic and the whole procedure is painless. Afterwards for about an hour I felt like I needed the toilet constantly but after that I had no pain or discomfort at all. Good luck, hope everything goes well. X

Thank you, that’s very reassuring xxx

Hi Emmaquinny,

I’ve had 2 cystoscopes one with a local anaesthetic and another with a general anaesthetic. It was uncomfortable during the local one and it hurt to urinate for a good couple of days. With the general anaesthetic, again it was uncomfortable to urinate for a good few days. I had a biopsy and other tests during the general anaesthetic which probably also made me feel sore.

If you can get hold of the person who organises the appointments and make them aware of the two so close together they may be able to do both under general anaesthetic it’s possibly the same person seeing you. You don’t want to find you develop an infection and then can’t have the second procedure.

Sorry if it’s negative I don’t mean to upset just make you aware.

Hope it helps

Thanks that’s a good idea x

Emma I agree ^ surely they can do all at once in the 1st operation date this seens to me like a coincidental oversight that they are a day apart. The surgeon will undoubetedy be trained to do both and its more cost effective for the nhs.

Good luck pet xx

Sorry Helly I thought I clicked reply to you below rather than just a general. I feel so stressed 😭 if they cancel my lap for this I don’t know how I can keep going much longer feeling so tired and in so much pain 😭😭😭

I read uo on the cystoscopy its not going to help you the way a laparoscopy will is it? is it an investigatory lap or a lap with endometriosis eccision if found?

Yes - insit to that secretary you need the laparoscopy you have time booked off work and that the cystoscopy can wait! Make sure you get your way on this! X

Gutted. They’ve cancelled the laparoscopy until they have the cystoscopy results. I have a new date of 11th January. Just don’t know how I’m going to cope until then 😭

emmaquinny in reply toStarfish123

Hey, can I also ask as you’ve been through it, do they tell you your results on the same day? And also, do they manage to spot endo with this or are they looking for more suspicious things like tumours? Xxx

I just spoke to his secretary who said if I have the cystoscopy the day before they will probably cancel the laparoscopy-my reply was I will change the date of the cystoscopy! I’ve booked the time off work, there is a supply teacher in for me already to get to know our kids as they have special needs-the ball is rolling it can’t stop now! 🤦🏼‍♀️😩

Im so sorry they chose to canx your laparoscopy in view of getting cystoscopy 1st.

Is this decision fightable?

Is cystoscopy investigatory plus biopsy only?

Am I right do you have no Dx (Diagnosis) as of yet?

Pet, you are unfortunately in for the long haul with these conditions....maybe the laparoscopy recovery over Christmas is a no no for you, you would probably be in pjymas for 2 months with incision sites and swelly belly, have you plans?

Im trying to look on the bright side of this set back for you.

Maybe you are in sweat pants anyway tgese days as many cant tolerate jeans etc.

Im in jeans 8 months post hysterectomy ok so they are a size 14/16 but still able to wear without discomfort, it takes time.

Please try and enjoy the festivities. Hey, theres always Baileys coffees and mulled wine, red wine is probably good for Endometriosis due to the berry content and antioxidants.

Please enjoy and just know January will bloody fly in x

Thanks so much Helly for taking the time to reply when I know you’re going through a tough time yourself. I too am trying to look on the bright side. I’ve no specific plans but I love Christmas with my family so that’s enough for me. I’m also pleased I get to do all the Christmas activities with the kids at school. It’s funny you should say that about the red wine I had a glass for the first time in ages the other night, drowned my sorrows and I really enjoyed it!!!

You are an angel to me Emma, being the mother of a child in a special needs school, we NEED you well!

Our 4 ladies look after 8 children, 1 teacher and 3 x SEN's.

Enjoy your red wine immensely!

Spirits and wine seem to be ok on the Fodmap diet for endo...will send you a link. Im just starting this today as apparently our foods contain estrogen ans harmful fats to endometriosis growth etc.

Pm me any time you wish.

You will be so glad that laparoscopy lets you enjoy the school festivities and the bond with you cant be replaced by many children who may be like my son and have severe ASD.

Bless you

Just a diet that can be found online to support many health conditions but 2 great fact type sheets on this site - not endorsing it personally I just read up on fodmap diet yesterday x

katescarlata.com/lowfodmapd...

Stay off the choc or not? Lol...dark chocolate seems to be a better choice.

Thank you so much. I’m a glutton for punishment at the moment having started weight watchers on top of everything else going on, but I have 4 stone to lose to be a healthy weight. But I’ve lost 8lb so far so it’s worth it.

I hope you get some respite soon-and the same goes, feel free to message me, especially on those days that feel like it’s too much... I understand! Xxx

Im with you, Ive almost 3 stone on since last June, debility and the like, sedentary living as in pain...

Fodmap related strictly to causing lower chemical reactions to feed endo. Im not a WW girl too carb layden for me and always feel better in proteins plus more satisfied. Sugar is the devil to me, I am very bad since pregnancy and hysterectomy with a sweet tooth, pastries are my crack cocaine 😂😂😂😂

I know you need your physical fitness and strength in your job, just as I do for my Son, best of luck to you and stsy in touch!

The drama continues-despite my GP telling me I would get an appointment for the cystoscopy, and an appointment coming, I have a further letter from the hospital today saying the appointment is an initial one, no mention of doing the cystoscopy then after all, so letting my gyne know and consequently my lap being cancelled may not have needed to happen. Nobody answering any phones anywhere seen as it’s Saturday. So so stressed.

Oh dear oh me pet this is a bit of a balls up isnt it. Try and relax til Monday morning. There has been some kind of mix up and you just dont know why this has happened but as you have a laparoscopy date in January (you got it rescheduled yes?) Its still very close in terms of waiting lists. It will really fly in and I do worry that a lap from now onwards could wipe you out and kind of ruin your festivities. Remember you wont really be supposed to bend down or stretch or carry for a good while afterwards.

You will be swolen and needing pain relief and lounge style clothes, bra off, peppermint tea the works!!!

Either way, whatever way this works out is happening for you and its coming very soon in terms of dates for surgery.

You are proactive and this wont get away from you!

Try and resort yourself to the fact that that earlier lap is just gone, the date woukd have undoubtedly been snapped up and re booked via their system, yet you do your due diligence on Monday morning.

Please try and relax.

Good luck over the weekend.

Wine...wine helps!!!!

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a long recovery for the laparoscopy? X

emmaquinny profile image
emmaquinny in reply toEmilycaton12

This will be my first one, but I’ve read extensively about it! I think it honestly varies from person to person, and depend on what exactly they do once they are in-if they have just a look around, not as long to recover as if they are excising a load of tissue or adhesions. Xxx

Oh thanks! I am booked in for December 18th so hoping it’s not to long! Xx

Good luck with it, I’m sure you will be fine! It would be great to hear your experience xxx

Emily plenty of peppermint tea for the swelling as they extend your abdomen out with co2 gas to get a good look at your bits. This is standard but you tend to feel cramp and gas pain after and a sore shoulder its a side effect of the gas.

The incisions (usually 3) will be dressed, they will need to heal and they will require sterile bandage you should leave hospital with extras.

You will be sore for at least 2 weeks around the incision sites, plenty of bed rest no major tasks like hoovering stretching or laundry no no no no as your abdomen may have had excision on internal ligaments, cavities, pouches and reproductive organs aswell as bowel possibly.

Soup and plane foods for 3/4 days and Dulcolax stool relaxer to help you get your 1st bowel movement post surgery which may take up to 5 or 6 days. You will need painkillers for sure and to dead on take them 4 hourly, dont miss a dose!

Id say its fair to say a good 6 weeks before you feel anywhere near yourself, 3 months for strenuous exercise. Try swimming after 6 /8 weeks or walking. Very very gently does it.

Peppermint tea is a must! Peppermint sweets or the like.

You will be like a deflating whoopie cushion just watch out for the gas pains, sucking sweets post surgery helps xxx

Hide your own ibuprofen incase you are sore in hospital, I kept my own stash handy.

This is so useful thank you!! Not sure about being sore on Christmas Day though! X

HellyLlewelly profile image
HellyLlewelly in reply toEmilycaton12

I was considerably less sore on my 1st lap than my lap hysterectomy I remember I really only felt punched and bruised for about 2 weeks in the abdomen. I may have said a longer recovery up here ^ confusing the two sorry!

1st laparoscopic surgery removed a large tangled up endometrioma (chocolate cyst) and excided "mild endo"....endometrioma is mild eh? Lol. Didn't feel bloody mild my back pain prior to surgery was horrendous!
