Hi all, i ve been diagnosed with endo for a few years now and had a diagnostic lap 3 yrs ago. At that time they found an ovarian cyst and endo tissue on my bladder but couldnt remove it there and then due to the risk of complications. They scheduled me in for another lap to have another specialist on hand, went in again a year ago. They removed the cyst but endo tissue had miraciously disappeared! Anyhow, within a few months i started having the same sharp pains again and scans have revealed in have another persistent ovarian cyst, same size, same place. From previously i remember that only a lap will get rid of it but clearly its likely to come back again. Consultant and gp are both pushing for me to have mirena coil fitted. Im not sure. I respond quite dramatically to hormones and as a result havent taken any contraceptives for years and always managed endo pain and cramps with meds. Not ideal but i hugely prefer this to any hormonal treatment. So the idea of fitting the coil terrifies me! Im also not sure how the coil would prevent future cysts? Any experiences or knowledge that you could share with me?

Due to the fact that endo is not well understood and the fact that all women are different it seems that it is a case of trying various things and seeing what works for you. Current knowledge is that dosing women with progesterone such as the mirena or the mini pill often stops recurrence.
The good thing about the mirena if you have had problems with hormone pills in the past is that the mirena is a relatively low dose and is localised to the uterus so better than the pill which is in your entire blood stream. However, all women are different and you can't tell how you will react until you try it. There is a lot of complaints online but I think that people only post if they are unhappy with it.
I have have also had bad experiences on the pill but I have been been fine on the mirena so far with respect to side effects. It was the combined pill (with estrogen) previously so maybe it is the estrogen that I reacted to.
However, I had two surgeries in the second half of last year to remove an ovarian cyst. 4 months after removing it finally, and a mirena inserted, they tell me there is another one and it is 4cm already after 4 months....so seems like my body is more aggressive than the mirena. They are upping my progesterone dose now. So just be aware that the doctors present it as a solution, which it definitely is for some women, but equally you may be unlucky like me and have to try other things so just be aware that it can be an evolving fight.
I can't give you advice on it being fitted as they did it during surgery so I was out.
Good luck with everything.
