Hello. After starting HRT about a year ago, I started symptoms of Endometriosis. In November I had a large Endometriosis cyst, ovary and tube removal through laparoscopy. The laparoscopy also discovered further cysts and evidence of Endometriosis apparent which was decided not to be touch whilst having the op. The procedure I have had has not provided me any relief of any symptoms of Endometriosis.
Since the op, the GP has taken me off the HRT as it seems to make symptoms worst.
I currently have a few choices.
Not to return to HRT but have perimenopause symptoms.
Go back on HRT, which appears to increase the symptoms of Endometriosis but helps me manage perimenopause symptoms.
Or have the Mirena coil fitted, which will apparently stop all symptoms of perimenopause and Endometriosis. I have been and still am reluctant to have the coil.
Does anyone have any experience of having a coil fitted with regards to Endometriosis symptoms?
I would really appreciate any feedback to help me make a decision on the coil or hormone replacement.
Thank you in advance.

apparently if you have hrt with endo you have to have continuous progesterone with the estrogen, so check if that’s what you had. I haven’t had the coil, like you I don’t like the sound of it. Although my older sister had it from age 40 ish and got to 55 with very little menopause symptoms. 🤷♀️
Hi Finechina, Like yourself I did not want a merina and refused this for many years when offered it from the GP, I did take HRT as I had early meno starting when I was 37 and this did alleviate the meno symptoms. My main issue with endo was heavy bleeding and anemia, I saw my GP Nov 2022 and she recommended that I needed to do something to stop the bleeding and anemia so again recommended the coil, when I declined this she gave the option of being referred for an ablation I took this option, saw my gynecologist and was booked in for a hysteroscopy, this was under general anaesthetic and just before I went down I decided to have the coil inserted at the same time. I do wish that I had gone for the merina coil a long time before as I had almost no bleeding at all, a pantie liner was all I needed as just had very light spotting. The only side effects that I had was hormonal breakouts around my chin, which was annoying but not too bad. I have had a hysterectomy in December as I had thickening of my womb lining as well as severe eno and adeno, I don't know if having the coil fitted earlier would have prevented this or not but it was definitely nothing to fear and seemed to work very well for the 6 months that I had it. Good luck 🤞
It doesn’t suit everyone but the Mirena coil was the best decision I ever made. It changed my life. I’m on my third now and I’m 52. I did try HRT (patches) myself last year and my pains came back I did try a lower dose but then was advised to try the gel. I’m not currently using it but I’m going to give it a go again.
I had a Mirena Coil for 13 years (new one every 5 years when it expired). Yes it's painful to get fitted and it takes a while for your uterus to have a foreign object inside, but after your body adjusts, it's amazing as you rarely bleed due to the endometrial lining remaining thin. If your doctor recommends it for you, I would say from my experience, go for it!
Thank you for replying to me...others that I have spoken too with endometriosis, perimenopause and the coil since said the symptoms are still very apparent. The GP want me to take the mirena with the oestrogen gel. So surprised your GP recommending Progesterone pill?! I have a week to make my decision about the coil, i am still very undecided.Life as a mid of the road aged women sucks!
Hello Tina,Thank you for messaging back, nice to hear from you!
I am pleased that the coil has settled down for you and I hope the gel is helping with this.
I have agreed to a coil fitting. My appointment is in March 😬
Sorry to hear you are suffering from anxiety. I think that is a perimenopause symptom as I get that too, especially prior to the HRT. And since being taken off the HRT, sometimes I feel awful and struggle day to day. I hope with your coil and gel you might slowly feel better and not so anxious. As you say fingers crossed 🤞
