Shooting pains in rectum

Hey ladies,

How many of you get this horrific pain during your period? I take the combination pill so luckily I only experience this pain every 2 months but honestly I've never felt something more horrific.

It literally feels like a sharp rod going up through your bum, it comes in a wave and all you can do is clench onto something and hope it'll pass. I can't function on those days and I am genuinely scared of going to the toilet when on my period cos I feel like I'm pooping out razors. All I can do is cry, I can't bear it.

I have such a fear of how I'm going to cope with the pain in the next few days. What do you do to manage this sort of pain? Ibuprofen makes us even more constipated so that doesn't help with all these issues!

Hello I have the exact same think every time I'm about to come on my period or have a period. Feels really painful just want to scream when I spoke to my surgeon he said I could have endo my bowls not too sure if that was the problem until I see him in 4 weeks. I just had surgery done so hopefully I won't get the pain anymore. Hope you get it sorted x

Hi yes I go through this too!! I just bear with it really I don't think anything will help to get rid of it unfortunately just one of those things!!

Hi I have the same problem, my colon is fused to the back of my womb, they think it may have spread to my bowls, I use senna every night without fail and movacol, the movacol helps take that pain away when you go to the toilet, it softens your stools enough to stop making it painful when you open your bowls, it's the little bend at the end of your colon that it has to traval through which causes the pain, the senna will help with any bowl cramping and the movacol just one a day with soften things, it really works well for me so it may be worth giving it a try, hope this helps x

Yes, I have had this for years now, I remember the first time I got it, I was staying at a friends and I was on the loo, and I really thought I must be dying because I'd never felt anything like it. I didn't know what to do, I couldn't scream and wake anyone up, and clearly I was on the loo! But it passed.

It's so bad, isn't it, I usually say it's like I'm being impaled on a sword from underneath. I usually make a scream or something as I just can't control it, but I don't do anything, I just wait for it to pass, I don't know of anything that can help with it.

I have this too. I don't take anything to get rid of it I just have to put up with the pain sometimes it lasts just a day and other times it can last about 4 days.

I have this too when on my period, it's the worst pain and sometimes I can barely sit down after being the toilet!

I had a lap last month and there was endo on my bowel which was burned off and I also have a retroflexed uterus which can apparently push against the bowel and cause this pain.

This weekend will be my first period after the surgery so I'm quite nervous about whether the pain will still be there!

Hope it gets sorted out for you!

Yes I get this too. Its like being stabbed with a sharp knife in the rectum. It is so painful it wakes me at night and I feel like I am going to pass out.

I was advised by GP that I had Proctalgia fugax which is a common condition and is a the exact cause of the pain is not known, many doctors believe spasm of the anal sphincter muscle is the responsible factor. I notice it more when I get constipated. I notice when I pass wind or do BM it is releived. Try having a glass of prune juice daily and have a high fibre diet and drink sufficient water
