Will they operate if i have a cold?

Hi Ladies

I'm due to go in for my surgery on Thursday morning and I have come down with the worst cold today. I'm really congested but thankfully no sign of a cough or any problems with my chest. So I'm hoping this is gone by tomorrow but just wondered if anyone's surgery had been cancelled due to a cold?

Have you had your pre-op already? If yes, I'd ring up and just mention you have a cold before signing for surgery Thursday. Otherwise they may just send you home on Thursday. If you haven't had your pre-op yet mention it then xx

Thanks for your reply. I'll assess how i am in the morning and let the hospital know. I had my pre op last monday and then they had me back in for another set of bloods on the Friday. The first lot showed unusually high levels of potassium which turned out to be from the trauma of trying to take the blood....the saying trying to get blood out a stone clearly applies to me ha ha.....all good to go now though apart from this bloody cold.....fingers crossed its gone by the morning.....god knows how i got it as i have been so healthy the last couple of weeks getting ready for this op.... thanks again for your reply x

Stress and anxiety often affects our immune systems before operations. I've had a few operations and I've always been unwell right before I'm due to have one. Typical eh? But they've always gone ahead and done the operation anyway but they always like to know about things that might affect the surgery. Usually a cold might affect your recovery afterwards meaning it might take it a bit longer to recover. So I wouldn't worry too much I think they'll still go ahead with it but like I said make sure there aware of it though. Good luck and I hope it all goes okay for you! I'm on a waiting list for a laparoscopy I'm petrified Haha. All the best xx

Yeah i had a driving test today too....and failed because of the stress so your probably right, the pressure and stress I've put myself under probably wasn't a wise idea. I'm hoping now that that is done with and i am in general good health i can kick it quickly before the op. I'm not due to be admitted until 11.30am so i still have a day and a bit.....i understand how frightening it must feel, i just cope with it by thinking of how this is the first step in getting my life back so I am actually weirdly looking forward to it. I already know that i have it quite bad and that they will be doing quite a bit of work. I've been told I'll be in for 2.5 hours instead of the half hour exploratory surgery so I'm just glad there is a plan in place to just get in there and get it all unpicked and sorted. I've also decided to completely change my diet and lifestyle choices after surgery. Making that decision has made me feel more in control over everything and i feel confident everything will go well. I'll update on here afterwards....hope you are not waiting too long for yours...x

Yeah definitely do update! I love to hear success stories, it always puts other people anxious minds at rest (including my own) whilst waiting for surgery😊 So your operation is to treat the Endo then? Mine is too, they just haven't said roughly how long they think it will take. If you don't mind my asking what diet will you be following after? I'm really curious to know, I'm at my wits end with the pain and anything that may help whilst I'm waiting for surgery I want to opt for. Keep your strength up and think positive, I bet you can't wait to get everything in order😊 Xxxx

I will for sure.....I'm just heading to bed now so will reply properly tomorrow but in the meantime this is the book i read and plan to follow in my recovery.......Endometriosis: A Key to Healing And Fertility Through Nutrition by Dian Shepperson Mills..........it is heavy going in parts as it goes really in depth into endo and the chemistry around it but it makes total sense that you should change your diet to try and keep your endo at bay.....as i say i'll get back to you tomorrow as i want to try and rest up and wake up cold free....x

I had the beginnings of a cold when I had my laparoscopy in October. You should definitely mention it if you're bunged up. You need to be able to breathe! They took my temperature and if that had been over normal, they'd have cancelled the op. Fortunately it was fine. Phew!
