Heavy periods and bleeding between periods on the mirena coil and the combined pill.

Hi everyone,

I had the mirena coil fitted in December 2011 due to heavy irregular periods I was told to expect it to take 3-6 months to take full effect. After 6 months there wasn't any improvement so I went to see my gp who prescribed me the combined pill to take as well as having the coil. My gp said I can take 5 packets back to back without having a break, however if I don't have a monthly break I suffer breakthrough bleeding. My periods are just as heavy before I had the coil and twice as painful. I have been back several times to my gp and sexual health clinic where I have a smear test and swabs taken which always come back clear. The bleeding then gets blamed on my underactive thyroid! I have regular blood tests and haven't needed my thyroxine dose changed in years. I've started to suffer pain and breakthrough bleeding during the first pack of pills now so I'm anxious to know if anyone can help? I'm 29 and don't have any children.

Hello there. I had a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy last Sept, plus womb ablation (meant to stop periods), my left ovary removed and the grapefruit size cyst that was attached to it. Also they removed all my endo and fitted me with a mirena coil so I should have had a clean slate. Since then the Gynae has tried to stop my bleeding as the coil didn't work very well. I have been on cerezette since January without a break (I was told I could take them back to back all the time with no break), and have still been having problems. It's not as bad as it was before, but definately still bleeding, bloating and cramping. Saw the gynae last week and have been offered a hysterectomy after my next appt. Until then I have been offered the injection to start the menopause.. That's what my Gynae has offered me, tho it may b different for u as I have a daughter and am aged 42 (and don't want anymore!!!). U should maybe ask for a gynae appt and request an ultrasound which may show some signs of endo and let them know exactly what they r dealing with. I had an ultrasound and an MRI tho and showed absolutely nothing, even tho i was severe stage 4 a years beforehand (as bad as it gets). If that doesn't help, then ask for a laparoscpy which is where they make a small hole and put in a camera to take a good look around and then they can really c what they r dealing with. This is usually the best way to diagnose and therefore treat u... get urself a good gynae who wants to help improve ur quality of life as this is a chronic condition. A good gynae will help manage ur pain and symptoms for u. Good luck xx
