Husband and high hba1c

Hi husband has been pre diabetic for a few years HBA1C Levels 42-44 then August last year 50 Sept 47 but Feb 58! plasma previously around 5.4, plasma nov 9.4.was slightly overweight by couple kg.

He had a bit of a shock over the last result of 58, he had been eating 'healthy' chew bars and flavoured cofee sachets with spoon of hot choc and few biscuits!

any way after the shock of his results the last 4 weeks he's been on low carb low sugar diet, bakery wholemeal toast and avacado breakfast, wholegrain flat bread sandwich bag of various nuts piece of fruit, and then homemade teas of the likes of chicken or fish, veg, sweet potato/celeriac chips or wholemeal rice/noodles, normal coffee and herbal teas. Been taking omega 3 and also lost some weight so now good bmi etc

Due for new bloods in a few days, with past test always done fasting should this still be the same?

and realistically could he see a big improvement?

Want him to carry on with better eating and not be disheartened

Thanks so much

Dropping the healthy bars will help. You don't mention exercise. Diet will make a difference but combined with exercise will make a better improvement. When I say exercise I mean a daily walk.

I used Michael Moseley's 8 week Blood Glucose diet book and was in remission after 3 months. I have now been in remission for 5 years.

It does require a change in lifestyle - probably for the rest of my life. I don't eat bread, pasta or rice, but occasionally I buy low carb breads and pasta online.

I am currently training for a marathon so decided to invest in a blood glucose monitor - the first one is free from Abbot (Libre 2 Plus). They are only available on the NHS for people taking insulin, so you have to buy them (apart from the first one). However it has been a really good indicator of what spikes my glucose levels. I won't always use it, but would highly recommend.

(If it helps, I am 65)

Good luck

Thought I'd let you all know, bloods have come back and level has dropped to 51, so reduced by 7 is 4wks ! doctor has said outstanding results keep it up and more bloods end of the month. We did have a treat tea after bloods, was pizza and chips and a couple of drinks after. But he said after it back to my good food now :) and this result has spurred him on.

Just had bloods redone again after 3 wks, only gone down by 2, but works out down 9 in 7 weeks does that seem about right? We are still working in the healthy eating just want to reassure him.Waiting on docs to ring about what next?

Hay don’t worries, first of all, anything and I mean anything you eat will be changed into sugary. It’s amazing, might have perfect amounts of insulin but low utilisation. Why that might be occurring is the reason you need to become your own detective. That means you need to try different things out, expecting that some thing work better than others. Work with a specialist don’t wait for Doc, it to slow. And give it time, it takes time to find a solution which is good for now. The confidence you get from doing this is amazing as you take back control. And start to understand we go out of whack, everyone does, and what effects me won’t effect others and vice versa. Last thing Don’t think about it as a medical issue, just getting your body tune up for the good years it has already given you.

Confidence
