Reconsidering Vinpocetine - Not Feeling Well Today

So I took Vinpocetine yesterday, 2 doses of 30 mg, which put me at the high end (or over) the recommended dosing). Woke up feeling nauseous. Then I read Elliot's and Julie's warning and article verywellhealth.com/the-bene...

I'm gong to shelve this one for now.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of vinpocetine may include indigestion, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, facial flushing, insomnia, headache, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Vinpocetine may also cause a temporary drop in blood pressure (hypotension).

Vinpocetine has raised concerns in recent years following reports that the drug may cause immune suppression. One such case resulted in agranulocytosis, a potentially dangerous drop in white blood cells that leaves you at high risk of serious infections.

Because of this, vinpocetine should never be used in organ recipients, people with advanced HIV infection, or those on immune suppressive drugs (including chemotherapy).

Vinpocetine may slow blood clotting and should be avoided in people with bleeding disorders or who take anticoagulants like Coumadin (warfarin) or anti-platelet drugs like Plavix (clopidogrel). Vinpocetine should not be taken two weeks before or after surgery to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding.

Due to the lack of long-term safety research, vinpocetine should not be used in children, pregnant women, or nursing mothers.

But there is still this: Vinpocetine regulates levels of circulating TLRs in Parkinson’s

disease patients researchgate.net/publicatio...

In summary, the present study has uncovered an anti-

inflammatory role for vinpocetine in the treatment of PD.

Vinpocetine regulates TLR2/3/4 mRNA and protein expres-

sion; moreover, it modulates downstream signalling proteins

and cytokines. However, there is no stable or clear cause-

effect relationship between its anti-inflammatory action and

cognitive enhancement. Thus, vinpocetine is a good candidate

for future therapy in PD patients.

But this too "it is generally considered safe for short-term use". Short term use :(

in reply to Bolt_Upright

Instead of short term what about “hit and run” as I’ve heard doctors refer to it where one uses it a couple days a month or once a week? This is done with Quercitin and metformin.

in reply to Bolt_Upright

Bolt, 2 x 30? You took double the recommended amount. Yipes!

That is a big dose. I’m taking 10mg x 3 times daily, as suggested by Art, for memory problems, no PD. I’m getting indigestion. Art said it’s effect doesn’t last, so needs to be broken up (maybe not 2 x 30mg 🤔)

Bolt,

Did you note the credentials of the author and the person who reviewed the article?

vs

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Here are a couple of quotes from the review :

>>> ' Vinpocetine, a derivative of the alkaloid vincamine, has been clinically used in many countries for treatment of cerebrovascular disorders such as stroke and dementia for more than 30 years. Currently, vinpocetine is also available in the market as a dietary supplement to enhance cognition and memory. Due to its excellent safety profile, increasing efforts have been put into exploring the novel therapeutic effects and mechanism of actions of vinpocetine in various cell types and disease models. Recent studies have revealed a number of novel functions of vinpocetine, including anti-inflammation, antagonizing injury-induced vascular remodeling and high-fat-diet-induced atherosclerosis, as well as attenuating pathological cardiac remodeling. These novel findings may facilitate the repositioning of vinpocetine for preventing or treating relevant disorders in humans. ' <<<

>>> ' No significant side effects and toxicity have been reported for vinpocetine at therapeutic doses and it is generally thought to be safe for long-term use. '<<<

>>> ' Vinpocetine has been clinically used in many Asian and European countries for the prevention and treatment of stroke, senile dementia, and memory disturbances. ' <<<

The bold quote is in direct conflict to your quote below which you didn't say where it came from:

"it is generally considered safe for short-term use". Short term use

The dose you took seems high compared to study dosing I have seen of 30 mg/day.

Great points Art. i am still tempted.

"it is generally considered safe for short-term use". came from:

Vinpocetine regulates levels of circulating TLRs in Parkinson’s disease patients 2018

researchgate.net/publicatio...

"Nonetheless, because no significant adverse effects of vinpocetine administration have been reported either in our study, in the literature, or in clinical practice, it is generally considered safe for short-term use"

Have you looked at interactions with everything you are taking? You seem to have a long list now!

You kwow what I did, I saw the price per milligram was better with the 30 mg capsules than the 10 mg capsules and painted myself into a stupidity corner.

Is that supposed to be once a day then? What brand is that?

Swanson. Yes, it says 1 a day on the bottle.

in reply to LAJ12345

Do you have a recommended means of researching interactions and timing? Thank you for all the knowledge you share!

I just google th two compounds eg vincopetine and levodopa say. It says if there is a known interaction. I would also consider the effect of taking two things that have a similar effect as they might be additive or even amplify the effect of each other. Try and understand what the mechanism is of the compound ie what it affects, and then seee if other things do the same job, particularly a pharmaceutical. Eg St. John’s wort has effects similar to ssri so you might overdose yourself if you start taking them together.

Maybe make a spreadsheet of each new thing, how it works, interactions you can find and what the purpose of taking it is.

I plan to do 10mg Vinpocetine post lunch for 3 days as introduction, then Vinpocetine 10mg post lunch and, Vinpocetine 20mg + Ginkgo 120mg + Bacopa 380mg post dinner.

Good to go with this?

Not sure who you are asking. I have halted my Vinpocetine test for now. Rolled in sulforaphane.
