Tapering off Prednisolone 5mg suppositories

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone here has used Predsol 5mg suppositories for 3 months?

My Gastro said it was ok to use them that long . . .

I'm wondering if I need to taper off (for eg, use every second day for a few weeks?)

The gastro was not happy with me last visit as my bleeding had come back (not much), and my calpro went up from 177 on 4 Feb, to 467 on 21 March. I am a person who is loathe to take medications - and I think I exasperated her.

She said I had to go on Budesonide tablets - 9mg for a month, then 6mg for another month, then 3mg for another month. She gave me a 10 day deadline to start it if I had not turned the corner. (My meds: 4 x 500mg Salazopyrin per day, am Predsol 5mg suppository plus pm Salofalk 1gm suppository. Plus taking 1,600mg curcumin.)

The bleeding has stopped now for 3 weeks, so I want to come off Predsol, but I'm too scared to contact her office to ask if I need to taper!

Anyone have any experience with prednisolone suppositories and coming off them?

Thank you so much (and I do realise no one can give me medical advice!).

Hi,I wasn't on suppositories, but was started on 60 mgs for 2 weeks then tapered of down to 5mg,took about 3 months, then kept me on 5 mg for a year, when I came off them completely I felt fine.if you tapper of them properly you shouldn't have any problems.

as suppositories much less impact on rest of your body just where required, they don’t usually need tapering off . If any bloods or worsening just put yourself back on. I always start with suppositories first sign of trouble . Luckily since doing intermittent fasting giving gut 10-14 hours rest haven’t needed to . Also watch FODMAPS all these things help with colon issues .

Thanks for letting me know your experience, much appreciated. I am having a phone consult on Thursday with a Gastro who is filling in for mine. So I’m quite relieved to be getting professional advice . Appreciate the support from the members of the group.
