Long time no run!

2 weeks of a really bad cough and cold and it's driving me mad.. I'm going to have to get out tomorrow and at least give it a go. A few months ago the thought of even leaving the house not feeling well was a joke now i can't wait to get my trainers on and get out there.

I was off for about two months between a crocked knee and a chest infection. I've had to start from the beginning but it's so good to get out there again. My physio (who's an experienced runner) advised if it was okay to run if you have just a cold. But if it's affecting your chest, don't. Good luck anyway. xxx

I've been off games too - a week's holiday, followed by two weeks of a horrible cold. Was planning to go out this morning, but still felt a bit weedy; will take the dog out, and maybe go out later . . . It's so much more difficult to find the time now the clocks have changed, too! Good luck - it is a fantastic programme!

Ermintrude7-don't!!! You will set yourself back even further, and believe you me it is not worth it! Most of us have been laid low with this bug, taken time off and are gradually resuming normal service. You need to listen to your body and rest and recuperate, not bang it into submission, for it will be a lot longer recovering if you do.

So, on the couch, plenty of fluids, a soppy book to read, or a film to keep you occupied for at least another week. Steam inhalations will soothe your lungs from all the coughing-put something in the hot water if you like to make it smell nice, but it is the steam that does the job. If you feel like it a gentle walk, but no running!

I took time out like that, and so have others, and we have gone back to normal. Those who didn't are still suffering. Choice?

Hope you beat this soon :-)

Ermintrude.......go and see a doctor before you try to go out again. I am an asthmatic with a chronic cough and can cope so long as I have an inhaler with me. But, if you don'y usually have a chronic condition like me then you should get your chest checked out first. Pearsey's suggestions are spot on...and standing in a hot steamy bathroom with the shower turned on hot will help too. If it was summer and the air was warm and damp you might be OK but not in the cold damp air of late autumn

I ve been off nearly a month. I have put on weight and feel rotten. I am going for a swim now for the first time and tomorroww i will go running. Its driving me mad too. Cant imagine that I can run 5k. But I did and will again tomorrow or close anyway. Its amazing the difference I feel when I jog and dont jog. Cant wait to get back into it. When you re sick it is your body telling you to take a break I think!!!!

That's interesting as away this week and no suitable place for running - and I had just finished my week 5 run 3 - which I was very pleased with. Is it a good idea to go straight to week 6 or repeat run 3 of week 5?
