Long time no running…

I have just realised it’s been five years since I last did C25K.

a lot has happened since then, weddings, too many funerals, Covid and a hip replacement at aged 50. My question to you all, is there anyone on this forum that has completed this course post hip replacement?

I have not run since it was done, pre Covid, in 2020. I believe I can still run on it. Worse case scenario it may need replacing sooner, if needed, in the future.

Anyone still ran post hip replacement on here ?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome back... Well done you on getting here and yes, I do recall some folk who have had hip replacement, and completed this, but not their names!

Hopefully there will be someone who reads this who can help!

There is lots of info online... some useful some maybe not..

e.g.

hiprunner.com/about-me/

Generally it all seems to rest on what your consultant says... and there are mixed feeling on this...

PS

These folk have posted about hip replacement over the last year... it might be worth P M messages if they don't reply...

🍏You have a good reply from Oldfloss but just want to add that it would be wonderful to have you back running again. Keep us posted.

I have had my left hip replaced 18 months ago.I am now on week 4, I take my time and go steady. I swim in an open lake as well building strength.

Thanks for replying. How have you found it? I walk fine but feel a bit off balance when I try to run. Maybe I’m just being too cautious

Hi , if you don't get many relevant replies, try posting again with "hip replacement?" in the title of your post, then it might get noticed by the right people. I clicked on your post because I'm also redoing c25k but I know nothing about running after hip replacement so all I can offer is my support, good luck!

Hi (thanks for tagging me Oldfloss), and apologies for the late reply - all of my Health Unlocked content seems to go to Spam...Anyway, I can give you the benefit (!) of my experience so far. I had one hip resurfaced in 2007, and didn't run again until New Year 2020. I had been a recreational runner before, and it took me that long to decide to give it a go again. However, it was fine - a little stiff occasionally, but turned out OK; I completed C25K and moved on to 10ks, working towards 10 miles. Unfortunately the other hip started to bug me (I knew it would need replacing at some point & I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did), and I reluctantly had to pack in my running last February - it was just too sore. I was lucky to get it replaced last July, and having checked with the surgeon that it would be OK to run again, I was keen to get started. According to him, the only things I should avoid are the rowing machine at the gym and downhill skiing (as if 😁). I've been reading a lot, and there's such a range of advice - from "no way" to "go for it". However, the consensus seems to be that you need to give the implant time to integrate with the bone, and this can take from 6-9 months. I did my first new C25K run this morning - I managed to wait for 8 1/2 months, and it feels fine so far. I just felt ready, and it was so nice to get my shoes back on! I intend to be careful & slow & just see how it goes - I hope you've had a go, or maybe you'll find my experience encouraging! Hope to hear how you got on - good luck!
