GOOD Morning RUNNERS!!!

It is Sunday, and having put up the first of the APRIL/ Catch Up Posts... here goes with the add-ons!

Told you the Corner was getting a Spring Clean ,New Look..

The Corner is open, the door is wide and the windows are letting the welcome sunshine in!

Grab a cushion, grab a snack and a drink and settle back.

These last ten days or so... it has been really really noticeable that folk are brushing shoulders on their runs, with the terrible twins... Niggle and Twinge!.

Aches, pains, strains and pulls... and often asking for help or support with these painful issues!

Well, first off... if the pain continues... then you get expert advice... nothing we can offer, can replace the treatment from someone who knows,,, GP or Sports Physio

BUT... there is support in the form of our wonderful sister site... the S and F Forum,

If you have not visited yet. please do.! YES... YOU really need to visit!

healthunlocked.com/strength...

It is all about the type of strength and stamina work that we advise our runners to do alongside their running, it is one of our very own sister forums and it is brilliant... and if you have not visited it yet... you really should have!

Great tips and advice for the strength and stamina work that many of us find so, so useful to do alongside our running.

Now, some of our runners, particularly those who have run for a while, do their own things with S and F, but this site is a terrific starting point. With a wealth of information.

Also great, if by some twist of fate you have an injury... the ideas for keeping up our strength and stamina are very useful.

The rest of our body really needs to keep up with our legs! Many of us find this out, both when we are first setting out on our running adventures and then again, as the runs get longer.

So, on some of our rest days, non impact work is essential. That is what the forum is all about... and you don't need a gym, or oodles of expensive equipment to be able to participate!

You just need, You, some self discipline and a lot of enthusiasm.

I have gathered a few basic links here and there are links on the S and F forum too, .. beginning with the NHS site for Strength and Flex. Many, many folk did and still do use these alongside their running.

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/s...

So... just moving on from that basic link... here are some more ideas for the kind of exercise many new runners ( and some more experienced), ask about.

Beginning with dynamic pre runs stretches and warm ups...

Some folk do dynamic stretches before running, some not... you find what you need and what works for you.. but any pre-run work must be dynamic.

Then, after our wonderful run, however long or short... we do our post run cool down and stretching...and, again many of us find these basic stretches perfectly adequate

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/

I have on the S and F forum posted exercises for different parts of our running body. Scroll around and take a look... Our wonderful CBDB has also done many, many useful posts.

So what I would really like you to do, is, to just think how important strength and stamina work would be for you.

Listen to your body and note, any minor twinges, or persistent aches and pains... areas where you feel there is a need for some extra work.

Non-impact exercise on some of your rest days is essential, especially as the runs get longer, there is so, so much to choose from, and all of which can be done without the expense of a gym membership.

E.g.

Yoga

Pilates

Walking etc...etc.

Begin to form a regime of core strength and stamina work for yourself, keep it simple, do it on some of your rest days and it will soon become a habit... a good one.

So, please... do pay a visit, and once you are there... stay with us.

You are worth it!

Floss x

P.S.

In answer to the question on the photograph? We all do!

There we are... LOOKING forward to welcome you over there.

Are yes, after yesterday I couldn't agree with that more! Slight calve strain.I was watching a podcast by a PT and ultra running person yesterday and though I won't repeat some of what he said as it is complete contrast to some of our (c25k) philosophy, he did say strength training is the one most important thing you can do to help prevent injury, something I now realise I really really need to look at, at any level the muscles are what do the physical work and need be in the best position to support are bodies and what we put them through.

Thanks for this post, a timely reminder.

The catch up corner looks lovely after your spring clean, I need to do the same!

An excellent post Oldfloss . The strength and flex forum didn’t exist when I graduated c25k many moons ago, and I like many others felt invincible as we started doing things like parkrun. It is true that our running bodies were still not strong at that point and I for one had a calf injury within a few weeks by going too far, too fast, too soon. Thankfully I was recommended a sports physio who gave me lots of exercises to strengthen and repair.

I also had to stop running for a few weeks, so be patient and take time with those consolidation runs and don’t make the same mistake as me.

But do enjoy spring running- it really is the best.

Thanks Dexy..me too !! The sunshine is showing up the dusty bits... on me too!

The S and F forum...yes, a useful place for us all... and you have benefited from that and prior to that your Physio' support!

Hopefully whilst you are sitting here resting, some of our new runners may pop in and read your very wise words!

Thank you for popping in x

So true. We all need a bit of S&F in our lives! 🙂

Here is an old post from one of our many S&Fers, who put together a photo montage of all the exercises in the 5-week NHS S&F program.

I really like that montage from DorsetRunner healthunlocked.com/strength...

Hi Oldfloss and running friends. I agree with everything you’ve said and indeed I have used some of the S&F exercises to maintain my fitness (or to recover when I’ve overdone things from time to time).

If I may go off topic for a short while, as some of you know I’ve been attending hospital appointments over the last year or so and things are now coming to a head and the way forward has been decided. I don’t have a date yet, but I do know the operation will involve teams from at least two areas of expertise and will last from 8-12 hours.

I won’t go into details of the proposed operation here, but my point in going off topic is that the surgeon I saw last week told me that they were very confident that it would be successful because I am starting from a position of very good fitness (thanks largely to running and walking), allied to a positive mental attitude. I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
