Why recovery days are so important

Just thought I’d post an explanation I recently received of why recovery periods are so important for us runners. As runners progress to running regularly during C25k / after graduation, many runners, including me, are often tempted to run on consecutive days.

I have to remind myself at times that those important recovery days are part of the training. Keeping them makes a runner stronger.

So here is some guidance from a leaflet I received from my physio friend, explaining why maintaining recovery days are so important.

Happy running AND recovering!

Understanding the recovery cycle

When you exercise, you stress your tissues (bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, joints), and they develop tiny micro-injuries.

In response, your body goes into repair mode and removes unwanted injured cells, repairs the remaining ones, and adds new, stronger ones. In this way, your tissues heal and are made more robust.

This micro-injury-repair cycle is a normal stress reaction and response to exercise. It helps your body adapt to higher loads, which is why you get stronger and your activities get easier.

Repairing and strengthening your body requires a period of rest after an exercise session. If you train too often, the micro-injuries can accumulate and cause a flare-up of your injury or new overuse injuries to develop.

Always useful to reiterate when we are getting itchy feet and want to jump off that IC or continue running every day... On a different note love those leggings...

Great advice and useful to remind folk that this links with the basic sound advice in the, How to Run C25K FAQ post...

"THE REST DAY FROM RUNNING IS NOT NEGOTIABLE, which means you should not, as a new runner, run on consecutive days, but does not have to be spent back on the couch again. When you run, unlike other exercises, you actually damage your muscles and the rest days are when they repair. Any non impact exercise, such as swimming, cycling, weights, Pilates or yoga will be beneficial to your overall fitness and to your running and will aid the repair and strengthening of muscles. The NHS Strength and Flex exercise plan is perfect to do alongside

and the HealthUnlocked Strength and Flex page is here, run by many C25k veterans.

Is the little red patch on your left running shoe a fashion feature or covering a big toe hole? I just ask because I have holes in both of my shoes and need some kind of patch……

Yes, it’s a little patch kit. My post about it is here: healthunlocked.com/bridgeto...

And the family business selling these are: pairups.co.uk

it works really well.

Thank you that’s brilliant! I have tried darning with needle & thread - didn’t last long. Duct tape on the inside - tricky to apply so also came unstuck quite quickly….
